Exhaust Backbox Blew Up & Split Apart!

Been using the car regularly and all has been well....until today! Was on way home whem I heard an almighty BOOM pulled over and basically my backbox (which was new 4 months ago) had split apart!

 

Any idea how this could have happened? Car was running fine no misfires or anything. Still drove fine aside from being gigantically loud due to an open backbox!

Pattern one? had this a couple of times with them, No idea why, Just cheap I guess

Yeah pattern one Miles, they are pretty cheap to be honest. KABOOM and it was split.

My brothers mi did this a few times to cheap boxes, the ones that are folded and pressed together on the joins.

Either the loft insulation has broke loose inside the back box and bunged up the tail pipe or (not unusual) if you have a cat its possibly broke apart and been blown through into the back box and jammed in the tail pipe.

 

Either will result in what you have left

 

Once stood next to a mitsubishi space wagon that had a back box like a hot water cylinder that did this, the noise was tremendous I thought i'd gone deaf lol

It does not have a CAT. Yup the boom was enormous, I thought the engine had blown so in a way I was relieved to see my backbox split apart!

Was there actually any wadding/packing in the silencer?

Dunno, assume so, whole exhaust was new throughout!
