Next Projetct? Cti Just About Done.

Recommended Posts

ALEX

Just a few minor finishing touches to my cti project (see sig) and its ready for the road.

Though logic doesn't justify getting it mot'd for the winter, so I'm planning on waiting till april to enjoy it.

Fustrating dilemma I know, as I'm iching to drive it. Also final pics will follow when I get it out of the garage to some place more photogenic.

So I was thinking I'm going to need something to do in the meantime.

My shortlist so far is.

Mr2 mk1

mx5 (early pop up lights)

Audi tt (cheap restoration) project

Though just one small problem to overcome, I've nowhere to put it, and a missus to convince.

Maybe I can fit the mr2 in sideways next to the cti in my prefab garage... or on the roof.... if I get some long ramps or something...

Anyway, whats your recommendations? What would you like to own/ restore other than another 205.

Renault 5 Turbo or MK3 RS Turbo

Both expensive to get though.

You'd best get CTI MOT'd then you know your ready to roll at your leisure, hopefully a couple of months of good days left yet, its only August!

Not seen a ren 5 turbo in years, or at least a good example of one. For the money they are going on ebay, I could get something more exotic.

Not really a ford fan myself.

I was thinking maybe other possibilities would be an old alfa, or honda crx.

Mk1 MR2 or a Mk1 MX-5 for me.

I've had a Mk1 MX-5 (well, Eunos) and it was great - fun, reliable and they're not too terrible rust wise apart from the well documented issues with sills and rear arches. I'd love a Mk1 MR2, but the rust problems on them are pretty considerable and that ruled it out for me given it would have to live outside and I can't weld.

If you want an Audi TT, they're new enough that you might as well just buy a tidy one in the first place. Seems an odd choice as it's very different to the other two and typical of a modern performance oriented car really - quick, lots of grip... and utterly dull.

I figured I'd have to learn to weld if I bought an mr2, I have a mate that would be able to teach me.

the audi tt is getting on a bit, P reg I think 97?. Never been in one but the idea of a cheap roadster appeals to me.

I'm also considering the cost for parts etc. Everything exotic ends up costing more to restore than buying a good second hand car thats as equally fun.

The cheapest way to restore a car is to buy 2 and use one for the spares and sell all the parts you don't need.

though the car has to be cheap to buy in the first place so something that still appears on ebay often.

I'd have to probably move house first though as space is an issue.

I too can vouch for the mk1 MX5.

Owned an H reg UK spec for 3 years as a daily driver and still miss it to this day.

Easy to work on, reliable, simple and great fun in the sun and especially in the wet!

Parts are relatively cheap, especially if you use mx5parts.co.uk (pretty much every OEM and aftermarket part thinkable is availabdle from these guys!)

Jap import Eunos are readily available, inexpensive and come with a LSD as standard!

Mx5! If you get bored or the rust gets too much it can always donate itself to a decent kit car.

We've had a Mk 2.5 for 4+ yes now and its brilliant. We would be with a roadster type car now and can't see past the 3.5 if we ever replace this.

How about a BMW E30, you can pick up a descent 325i or 318is in coupe or cab as a project for not a lot of money. Huge amounts of fun. And you cannot beat the sound of a 6 pot wailing.

They do rot but you can find descent examples. Parts are easy to come by, and not massively expensive.

There is masses of info on e30zone.net

The ones I'd go for are:

309 GTI (a challenge, believe me!)

Mk1 MR2

MK1 XR2

R5 Turbo

Astra GTE

Mk1 Golf GTI

Not really interested in the 309, and the fact its a peugeot aswell puts me off.

I've been in a restored xr2 a few years ago and was dissapointed. Feels cheaper build than the 205 with less fun.

astra gte and the ren 5 remind me of chavs. No offence to anyone who owns one. Just it was the popular cars of choice round our local scratter estate.

mk1 golfs are commonly restored so parts and barn finds go for silly money. And as far as im concerned the 205 is the better hot hatch anyway.

I like the bmw e80, not sure if it would be restorable on a budget.

Mini?

Or if you're really short on space, how about a Vespa?

309s are such underrated cars.

Same problem with minis as with the mk1 golf gti. Id love to do one but it's too costly to restore. I think I'd have to be an entusiast to justify the cost.

And don't do motor bikes.

Still not convinced about a 309

same as a mk1 golf but a better looking under rated car, floorpan is mk1, most of the running gear too.

Toyota bj40

Cars that are similar to the cti, will be disappointing, since it will not give more joy... Or if they do, you will sell the cti. So choose a different ballpark...
