Gti6 Inertia Switch

Recommended Posts

dobboy

I never recieved this switch as part of the loom i bought and shorted it out etc during my conversion, done away with tacky etc, so have no means to automatically shut fuel off in an unplanned bump.

I also relocated my fuel filter to OS jacking position, (and getting a tad braver in the car) and thinking i'd be better safe than sorry.

From what i've read they can be a right PITA, but can anyone tell me if they are a real nuisance? or what kind of thing/level of bump can trigger them?

eg would a decent pot hole trip it?

(i've got B4's all round if that makes any odds)

TIA

They can be a pain, especially if they're getting a bit tired and over-sensitive.

A sizeable pothole can certainly trip it.

Up to you if you want to refit it and I've got one here that you'd be welcome to if you wanted it, but personally I'm comfortable enough knowing that the fuel pump will stop if the engine stops which is how it works on 8v and Mi16 engines as standard.

Another option is retro-fitting something from another car - loads of cars have them, just a case of finding one that it's a bit harder to trigger, or perhaps adapting an airbag trigger sensor from a car with one mounted behind the front bumper to cut the fuel pump in the event of a front end smack?

Thanks Anthony.

There's scrappy handy with lots of 306's in it with them still fitted, but i'm just thinking we had one in our Vavaro van that never accidently tripped.... we hit a deer one day and it tripped so i might get one from one of them.

I can live with it tripping on a sizable pot hole, at least i'd know cause and where look, and i'd probably be stopping anyway to assess any damage..... and curse the local council.

I never realised they were such a problem? I've had 6+ 306s over the last 13 years and never had one trip.

I've got the standard GTI6 intertia switch fitted to my car. In 7 years, and 1000 miles of the Nurburgring amongst other tracks and road driving, it's not tripped once.

Maybe I'm just unlucky, but I've been passenger in two cars that have stopped on track (205's) and one that's stopped on the road (306) as a result of that pesky inertia switch and heard of several others that have had issues with them.

Admittedly, the handful of 306 GTi-6's I've owned over the years have never had an issue.

Just to follow on from my last comment, on a track day last month I went over a kerb which tripped my inertia switch  I was lucky not to have a car pile into the back of me coming out of the corner.

I would quite like to relocate it inside the car as it would make it a lot easier to switch back on if in reaching distance. I'm sure it would be less sensitive to kerbs too, as currently it is close to the NS strut.
