Car Wont Run With Afm Plugged In ?

Just bought an 85 GTi and thought it ran rough while loading it onto trailer, it was back firing etc. went to start it today to take it of trailer and nothing so had a rummage in engine bay and noticed Airflow meter unplugged, So I thought problem solved, but nope still nothing, changed AFM with a old 1.6 one which will start my 1.9 but nothing . I unplugged it again and car started but runs rough. Was enough to get it off trailer and parked up for now. Anyone got any ideas what problem could be? cheers

Think you would want to checking for air leaks first as with the afm unplugged it probably dumps in more fuel.
