Looking For A Garage To Restore My 205?

Recommended Posts

Dayv205GTi

Hi All

I have a 1988 E plate 205 GTi 1.9, I have owned the car 14 years but sadly over the last 5/6 years it's just been sat on the drive feeling sorry for it's self :-(

The amount of work needed to get it running is far beyond anything I can manage on my own, so I am considering just paying a garage to do a complete ground up restoration for me.

Does anyone know a good garage they can recommend as I have spoken to a couple locally and am not convinced they are any good after seeing some of their work! (runs in paint work etc)

Bits I know that need doing are:

New rear beam (seized on o/s)

New fuel lines

New brake lines

New brake servo

New tyres all round

Rust removal and possibly new sections welded in on some areas (sills, just under the doors and a section along the bottom of the boot near the latch)

New front bumper and grills

Will also need new cambelt, full service and tune up.

New Radiator (current one leaking)

Full paint job!

And probably lots more!

Before I took it off the road it had new brake calipers, discs, pads, clutch among other things.

Really want to get it back up and running again after seeing a Black one on the road yesterday and being incredibly jealous of how good it looked!!!

Any help would be most appreciated as I don't even know where to start with it or the best way of getting all the bits done!

Thanks

Anthony

Personally I would probably tackle it by first of all getting all the mechanical items done, so beam, fuel lines, engine service etc, then get it MOT'd.

Then as a separate job (& probably at a different place) have the paint work and cosmetic items sorted out.

It is unusual to find a place that is a jack of all trades and is good at all of them. So take it to someone that knows 205's for the mechanical work, then to a good bodyshop for the paint etc.

As above

Also how deep are your pockets too ? would it be not cheaper and a lot faster just to buy another one now and enjoy it now , instead of waiting ages to get this one done

A fair trek for you but it might be something SOS Motorsport in Falkirk would do.

They know 205's very well too

By all means give me a shout, I know without blowing my own trumpet I've been working on these since 1988 which only a couple of other's can complete with so getting the detail things right is where we are at, I don't do body work but have 3 suppliers here from a basic spray job ideal for Rally cars to Show winning but of course the price match's the end result.

Good thing here is the car can all be stripped and shipped of to the painters so you won;t get any overspray or bad masking of window's, trim etc

Yeah budget will be an interesting one! don't want to say as much as it needs as my pockets aren't that deep but I know it's going to be a lot to get everything done the way I want.

I have considered buying another but as I have had this one so long and have done so much work to the engine in the past I know it's a good one.

Original engine had seen better days so ended up putting one from a later J plate in and ported and polished and rebuilt the thing (albeit in 1999!) however it was one of the quickest around at the time, there was an original Turbo Technics version (with some minor mods) in the local area and when putting the two up against each other they were an equal match (not bad for a N/A version) I also have some emotional ties to this car so just can't bring myself to scrap/strip it.

@miles I want my engine bay to look like your Cti! it did some time ago but all the paint has faded and cracked off most of the parts now.

I know it's near impossible to give an estimate on what it might cost but what budget I am looking at (minus paint/bodywork as may have found someone to do this) to get most parts powder coated and the car looking like your Cti?

My main problem is I'm fussy and very particular over my cars and if I'm doing this I may as well get it done well first time round!

Lots have suggested just getting the mechanical bits done to get it MOT'd and then do bodywork etc and then others have said the opposite?? If I had space to do it I would just strip it down get the shell looking like new and then put it all back together with new/refurbished bits all round.

Powder coater's I have never understood, You can go there sometimes and think you have done well other times not, but the last time I got some info of £56.00 + VAT for a colour change and no more,

The Red CTi didn't have a huge amount done believe it or not but thanks to the low mileage it was all pretty good and came up well with a good polish.

As for costs drop me a email with a job list and how you would like the car to end up, It's difficult I know as fitting old parts on a mint shell is odd so it's worth buying new (Cheaper than cleaning up most of the time) so it goes on and on
