Engine Out And In. Now Problems..

Recommended Posts

MrMemzi

Hi guy's. basically late last year I had to change my clutch. so i figured I may aswell take my engine out as my exhaust mani bolts we're snapped in the block and there was various leaks. Anyway. 1 paddle clutch 2 gaskets. And new mani bolts later. the engines in..jobs a gooden. all plugged in. but fuel pump wouldn't prime or kick in. So for a quick fix I just put it on a switch to the battery. anyway I never sat in traffic sit never realised that also the Fan doesnt work on the rad. what seems to be the problem? what havent I plugged in?

Many thanks

They're probably unrelated problems as the fan loom is totally self-contained.

The first thing to check for both problems is the fuses, the fuel pump fuse is in the glovebox and the fan loom should be fused on the shunt box.

The fan loom is very simple so start with that, it connects to the shunt box for power, it has an earth connection just behind the N/S headlight, it connects to a sensor in the radiator, there is a resistor (large metal cylinder) plugged into it and obviously it connects to the fan itself. There is no need to disconnect any of it to remove the engine except for perhaps the connection to the fan itself so that would be my guess.

The fuel pump is powered by the tachymetric relay and I can't think of anything that you could leave unplugged that would stop the relay triggering that wouldn't also stop the engine running entirely so I'd check the relay itself first, it could have just failed coincidentally.

Check that you've plugged the engine management loom into the under bonnet shunt box - that powers the tachymetric relay (and in turn the fuel pump and injectors) so would explain why the fuel pump wasn't working, but would if you spliced a live into it which would in turn backfeed the injectors.

Easy test is to check if you've got 12v at the thick brown wire on the tachymetric relay with the ignition off. If not, check the shunt box connection and fuse.

If you do, use a couple of lengths of wire to bridge that thick brown wire to the two thick white wires - that'll power and the injectors and fuel pump, so if you hear the fuel pump running then suspect the relay itself.
