Garage/workshop Share, Do They Exist?

Recommended Posts

timoth123

So I'm out of the RAF in a few months and although I'll still be able to get access to the workshop on unit but I won't be around to bat off any one eyeing up the slot.

I've seen on here a few projects being completed in workshop being used by multiple people doing multiple projects.

Now that's what I'd like to get into ideally. But do they exist or is it just a thing that a group of mates have put together?

I share a garage with a mate, there's no way I'd share one with strangers! Think about it....

I once shared a large unit with other tenants that I didn't know from Adam.

I used to take my tools out there with me each time to reduce any risks of items going walkies.

Some things went missing as people would 'share' without consent and not return/leave sprawled out in/under cars. Obviously not all unit shares would be like this, but it's worth thinking about.

One group would take no care and lean bits up against other peoples vehicles in storage and decided to use a set of my wheels as axle stands.

My concern was you never knew who would be visiting and snooping around. Not a huge issue to me as I was only breaking cars. My main problem was arriving and finding someone had dumped a car in the way of where you wanted to be for access. Again, if you are aware of the people, or there are rules in regards to what's acceptable than you should be ok - but I'd personally avoid if it's for a long term project.

I shared a unit once with a friend of mine. We just decided it was what we needed and spent a morning leafing through the free ads and ringing people up. We got quite lucky I suppose, what we ended up with was two cars in length, with plenty of room around to work on the cars.

As above though, I'd be cautious about sharing a workshop with a stranger.

Is there anyone local to you that you know and can trust that you can team up with? That's be my recommendation :)

Me and my friend are looking for one. It's a total pain as there just isn't a lot about and what there is way overpriced and not very secure for the cost.

What' the best way of finding lockups? Mostly luck it seems which we're having none off.

I wouldn't share with strangers myself seen first hand the probelms with it and it's not pretty.

This is something im looking into as well, they do exist but seem to pop up and then disappear pretty quickly. Another problem i have found is some landlords aren't happy for the places to be used for car storage/working on. That's probably just the two i happened to ring up about

Put wanted adds up. That's how we got ours.

Try some local Facebook groups, like buy sell swap, house sales, etc as I'm sure someone out there has a garage they don't use, but wouldn't mind a bit of extra cash every month.

I share a large unit with 4 others, a young chavy chap with a 106, two 40ish guys restoring a 50s Ford pickup and a series 1 Land Rover and fourth is the owner. I often find cars parked in front of the car lift, the expensive tools I take with me home, but other than that it's great. Nobody touches anyone else's tools.

As with anything, you need a nice set of rules from the very beginning that everyone can agree with and all will be well. The advantage here is that most young germans live in shared apartments so there's a culture for this.

I rent a small barn on a farm but only found it through word of mouth etc best bet is to ask around I found a few farms round out area which had Space etc but some were silly money. I now share the barn with a work mate but definitely wouldn't want to share with a stranger

Council garage? Over here in Norwich they have loads... I'm not a council tenant, but able to rent one... Usual rules apply, such as not business use, explosive contents, and own car etc... £40 a month.
