Best Way To Restore Spoiler?

Recommended Posts

mrfirepro

I spoke with U-pol today and they think there should be enough to do 3-4 bumpers, so I guess 5-6 spoilers.

Tim - If your still going to pick the glass up we can do your spoiler at the same time.

Did this at the weekend and really pleased with the outcome, it was quite simple and it looks really good.

The only comment I would add is that the fine texture spray was still a little too aggressive when compared to OE.

Overall very impressed, have taken loads of pics and as soon as I've downloaded and reduced them I'll post them here.

Alex,

Have got lots left in all the cans, if you want to send me yours. (don't forget you'll need a black finish)

Will also do a little write up for anyone considering doing it, but it is really easy.

Awesome mate! Can you send me a link to the can I need to buy?

I'll now buy a second hand spoiler and send it on to you, and will also send the money for half the materials by paypal.

Awesome mate :)

Overall I thought the U-Pol products were really good and they all did what they said on the tin.

These are the products I bought (all off eBay) with a total cost including delivery of around £85.

P1040705_666x500.jpg

I had previously attacked the spoiler with some (120, 240 and 400) wet and dry to try and sand out the imperfections, but was unsuccessful.

this is what it was like to start with

P1040715_666x500.jpg

P1040717_666x500.jpg

it's hard to see in the pictures but the surface was crazed, pitted and lightly cracked in places, also there was variation in the colour and texture all along the spoiler

to start with I gave it a good clean (wife wasn't too impressed, said I'd used her best washing up sponge, how can anyone have a best washing up sponge    )

P1040722_666x500.jpg

then dried off with compressed air.

Next used U-Pol 1 cleaner, sprayed onto a cloth to thoroughly clean the spoiler (1 can is enough for lots......)

P1040708_666x500.jpg

Next used U-Pol 2 (adhesion promoter) sprayed onto the spoiler and left for an hour to dry.(1 can is enough to do lots..)

P1040709_666x500.jpg

Next used U-Pol 3 (filler) I gave the spoiler 4 very light coats and left a couple of minutes between coats (I think the instructions on the cans said 3 minutes, but it was very hot and I'm impatient)

P1040710_666x500.jpg

I then sanded the filler with 400 grit W&D (used dry) until consistently smooth all over, the filler sanded very well with the lightest of pressure.

P1040730_666x500.jpg

Even with the lightest pressure you can see where the filler had been sanded completely

P1040731_666x500.jpg

Then cleaned the spoiler with U-Pol 1 sprayed onto a clean cloth.

Now for (what I know now) is the trickiest part, the U-Pol 4 texture coat. U-Pol do two textures (Fine and course) I used fine. I would really like to look at a new spoiler as it may be better to ignore the texture coat all together. (1 can will be enough for 3 spoilers)

P1040712_666x500.jpg

I sprayed 6 really light coats and left 3 minutes between coats. Be careful here if you build up too quick it goes flat and the texture variation shows in the final finish. I went very slow but think I could improve by trying to be more consistent with each coat (did I mention I'm impatient :P )

first coat

P1040733_666x500.jpg

Last coat

P1040740_666x500.jpg

All that's left to do is the final top coat, U-Pol 5. I used the Dark Grey which is a very good match to the P1.5 grey and sprayed 6 light coats. They also do a black for P2 cars. (1 can is enough for 2 spoilers)

Here are a few photos of the finished item and some with the spoiler on the car (A bit premature as I've not fitted the glass, but couldn't resist)

P1040741_666x500.jpg

P1040745_666x500.jpg

P1040782_666x500.jpg

I can't as yet vouch for the longevity of the product but thus far I think it's a quality product which provides a good clean finish without any drama.

Am doing two other spoilers and providing there is enough left in the cans would be happy to do more.

If you want to renew the spoiler fittings these are still available from Pug

That texture looks pretty good. I was a bit skeptical, but looks a nice result.

Looks ace! If a ph 2 black can of finish is bought, and there is some left over, I would gladly contribute towards paint and time costs in order to have my spoiler done :)

NOS spoiler on my car.

Interesting. I always assumed they must have had an obvious texture from new, just like the bumpers/arches etc, but in those photos your's looks quite smooth

Hence why I though I would add a photo.

I had black ones in the past, may contact the buyer and ask if his is smooth

Craig - No problem, the more that are done the cheaper it is for us all. I expect the total cost to be no more than £30 (excl postage), send it over, Alex has ordered a can of black and is sending with his spoiler. Are you up for trying it without a texture finish to see how close we can get to OEM?

Farmer - Thanks for the pics

The texture does look good.

When mine needs attention I will go down this road.

Paul, did you re-mortgage the house to buy 20 of those spoiler clips?

About £2.50 each those guys

As soon as my used spoiler and paint turns up I'll be sending it on to you Paul, hopefully will go off to you on Saturday so you should have it by Monday.

Happy for others to use the remainder of my PH2 black paint by the way.

Paul - great result - I'd had my eye on the UPOL Plastx for a while. Glad it worked out - out of interest - did you spray the texture coat at a distance of 30cm or less - I seem to remember reading something about needing to keep the spray head close in order to get a fine texture. Must be something to do with how the particles diffuse...

Ashley - I used about 30cm, when I did go a little close the texture went a bit flat, once I understood that I sprayed no closer than 30cm, the only problem with this distance it did feel a little wasteful.

Quick update..

We are spraying three spoilers (Alex, Craig and Tim's) have received Alex's and the paint.

We have also lucked out on the paint, as on the can it gives examples of matches and states for Peugeot 205, 206, 405 and 807.

So the black paint to use is PLAS/5SB (Signal Black)

When all spoilers are received we should also be able to tell any differences between the phases (I hope)

We are also going to spray one of the spoilers without the texture to see how close to OEM we can get
