Massive Kangarooing From 1.6 Gti

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

this maybe a topic that's come up before but I'll ask since my car is slightly differently set up, I bought a white 1.6 back in June and it's just finished having an MOT slapped on it and repairs done, it was stood around for a few years prior to this, and somebody has fitted some kind of manual choke device in the car.

This device is an air pipe with a valve on the side to control air flow to the engine, from all accounts it seems to work fine, opening if to half way increases the RPM to 1,500 which tired 205's seem to enjoy idling at, now I got half way down the road from the garage and the car started 'Kangarooing' really badly to the point that I had to turn around and take it back to the garage and they are looking at it today.

My question is, what could be causing this? The garage seem to think something to do with the Dizzy cap? Any other suggestions guys?

Still, it's looking good at least!

get it back to 100% standard first, then start with throttle initial settings, ignition timing, afm mixture settings.

also check the throttle cable, and engine mountings.

unlikely just the dizzy cap will be at fault, they tend to cause misfires, which is very different to kangarooing.

It's impossible to answer without knowing more about the 'choke' that's been fitted. It's obviously just a controlled air leak but if it isn't pulling the air it is letting in past the air flow meter the ECU wont be able to control the fuelling correctly.

Whatever it is you'd do best to get rid of it and put it back to standard then repair whatever problem it was masking.

Yeah it's a strange one, the pipe seems to be going through the engine bay and some steam was coming off it when the bonnet was lifted, I can only assume that the AFM isn't working correctly. The car seems to idle absolutely fine once the valve is opened slightly and can be closed off once the engine is warmed I felt the clutch pedal was a little high on the biting point compared to my other 1.6.... But I'd assume that's a separate issue.

I should have taken some photos to show you guys the setup and what would have been best to get it to standard again...

Okay gents,

Quick update, apparently the fault is being caused by the Coil lead, which is called the King lead? Any ideas where i'd source one?

Am I right in thinking that's included on the ignition lead kit that GSF sell?

Thanks

Thanks for your help gents, the car is back and running fine! My mechanic managed to grab a singular lead from GSF's odds and ends out the back :D
