What's With The Sudden Rush Of Late 205's For Sale?!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I'm always having a good look around at what's on the market, 205-wise. I've noticed that just this week not one, not two but three(!) 1996-P plate 205's have come up on the market, I bought one of them since I didn't think the 1.1 petrol was going that late but there's a blue 1.8D on Pre-Loved and a Grey 5-door 1.8 on Auto Trader too!

I haven't seen the real late cars for sale in a loooong time, and I didn't think there were more than a handful out there, guess I was wrong!

The bottom one is now on it's way to me.

It's originally a 1.1, I'm going to remove the GTi badges I think, it's not so much the Police hassle, it's boy racers trying to rev up behind them. I was forever having this problem with my diesel model when it had GTi badges on it.

I'm surprised a 1.1 made it out of the factory in 1996, I assumed all the last models were either the NA 1.8D or the 1.6 Auto.... Strange.

It's also technically modified, an insurance no no, have to declare it

Haha, technically, yes. However.... I don't know anything about modifications, it's second hand and I thought they all came like that :P

Yeah you're right, always best to be honest about it.

I crashed a citroen xsara with undeclared aftermarket wheels on it, they couldn't have been any less fussed if they tried.

Not that I'm promoting it and each case is different but I was surprised how little they cared.

I don't condone undeclared mods either, but when I crashed my Saab the engineer spent all of a whole minute checking the car. It could have had a V8 conversion under the bonnet and he'd have been none the wiser. In fact, he didn't even bother to check the bits that were actually damaged!

Having a bump is one thing, but god forbid you say knocked a person over and killed them, then you can bet your bottom dollar the insurance company will go over the vehicle with a fine tooth comb. It isn't worth the risk hence all my cars are insured as what they are.

Agree with that, You could write your own car off but if no one is hurt then it's more than likely a quick look... If something more serious happens like a serious personal injury, then thats when the fine tooth comb comes out!

To be fair, I don't agree with not declaring mods, there's probably a massive amount who don't declare their 1.6 / 1.9 to Mi16 conversions, I'd say this one would be pretty hard to prove or disprove about the trim level, I'm led to believe that GTi plastics were optional for base models weren't they? Do insurance companies -really- care / know about 205's?

Like I said, god forbid you mow someone down, the insurance company are faced with million pound payouts, all of a sudden they will become very interested. And to my knowledge no the GTI plastics were not an option, as the front and rear wheelarch shapes are different.

I think Henry Yorke said that there was an option for trim on a standard model? I could be mistaken and I learnt the hard way about the arch difference! To be fair gents, I agree with the insurance issues but moving back to the topic, has anyone else encountered a 96' 1.1 before?

Yep they were an option, but it is still an option. I have had fun with my 307 with the dealer fit optional SP kit on it and insurance in the past. We have all heard of people not being insured when they have an accident with snow tyres on some cars....

How many late plate cars do we think were registered and how many do we think are left out there?

What's the story with that T plate? I agree with the amount of GTi models coming up in the market, some are a good bargain as well if you're prepared to put in some work.
