Slow/difficult To Fill Fuel Tank - Cause?

Recommended Posts

mmatthej1

When I fill our 205GTI, I have to hold the fuel nozzle just part open, then let the tank 'burp' numerous times during the fill - this can't be right and I wonder if anyone can point me to whatever the problem could be, please?

Is there supposed to be a breather tube maybe? I can't immediately see one........

Mine is the same. Now I don't fully squeeze the trigger on the pump, just do it half way, it takes longer to fill, but there are fewer "burps"

I was wondering if the pumps are higher flow rate these days as I don't remember this happening in the early 90's with my other 2 GTi's

cheers

Andrew

If anything I think pumps pump slower.

The 10th's of a pence you can almost read each number 0-9 as the amount goes up. Years ago those same digits were just a blur.

To, some how, justify the rip off prices we have to pay!

Hum, seems quite likely that this is simply an unavoidable quirk of the 205!

My son is running an STDT and that is much the same, possibly a bit easier to fill but far from perfect....

If you try holding and directing the nozzle high at 12 o`clock and pointing directly downwards into the tank that definitely makes a difference when filling mines. Still can't take full flow but is acceptable.

Mine's the same when filling, wiggle to get the angle right and half throttle on the pump is about the best it gets.

The two I had in the 90s were the same as well. Got wet feet a couple of times until I got the hang of it.

It's pretty much the design of the tank and the filler. Not much can be done to improve it completely but there's a few things you can do to make a slight improvement but it varies from car to car.

Not sure how bad it is on the 205 as I don't really notice it but on more modern cars with valves in the filler neck you would find that it would go slower and cut-off (the handle clicks and flow stops) if you've run your tank further down due to a build-up of petrol vapour in the tank. The reason the pump can go quite slowly is because, as they push fuel in, then suck air and vapour out. The pump is much more efficient this way but it does mean it'll fill slowly if there's a build-up of vapour for it to remove.

Glen...the reason it probably seems slower is, as you've probably guessed, the rise in the price. It'll also involve the above reason and, this one in particular, the old analogue pumps weren't that accurate.

Bit of advice having worked for a petrol company...if you notice something odd above the display and the way it goes up (ie. if there's a slow rise followed by a bit of a jump in figures while you're squeezing the trigger consistently) then stop using that pump, use another and report it to the staff. One issue that occurs, particularly with super unleaded, is that you'll get big gulps/pockets of vapour rather than liquid going into the car's tank...and you get charged for it. Rare but it does happen.
