My Pug Is Running Rich (I Think!)

Recommended Posts

Telf

Hi all,

The last few weeks the pug has started stinking of petrol when I waiting in traffic. It also sounds pretty terrible.

I've had a look around the injectors/fuel filter/hoses etc and under the car - cant see any signs of a leak.

The fuel ecomony seems to be about normal- I'm putting the same amount of petrol in as I've always done for my weekly commute.

Its just been MOT'd with the following readings on the emission test- HC 99ppm vol,CO 0.4% it passed but I wouldn't know if this means its set up right.

Any advice would be great

Many thanks

The MOT readings if anything are on the lean side. MOT pass for a 205 non cat is below 3.5% CO if I remember right.

However there's nothing to say that there isn't some problem that has occurred since your MOT was done.

Did you lift the rear seat up and check the hoses where they connect to the pump?

yeah checked the hoses mate- I've had them leak there before.

I've looked on older MOT certificates the CO level has always been low- what sort of figure would anybody consider normal?

Its just been serviced too- I noticed the sparks were quite white- which means its running lean right?

This is one of the reasons I'm abit confused

Jackherer - are you any good at setting them up? Im not far away as you know and quite happy to drop by!

browsing the forums Ive just spotted a quote by Anthony regarding CO he says it should be about 1%( otherwise the car can sound like its missing) - its in the thread 1.9 with suspect SAD.

Well mine sounds like its missing too- it pops quite a lot at idle- I wonder if this is all related and its just not setup right? My wife commented on it sounding odd when I got back from work too

Also browsing Ive noticed older thread saying the ECU temp sensor on the SAD may be broken- or the wiring- I guess that's something to look at as well!

You can check the resistance readings of the ecu coolant temp sensor with a multimeter. The values are on here somewhere. I set all mine up using a gas analyzer to about 1% CO using the screw on the AFM. Might be worth a go just doing that to start with and see if it helps if you can get to a gas analyzer?

Where abouts in Suffolk are you, good to see another one local.

0.4% CO is a little on the lean side but to be honest if it starts and idles well I wouldn't mess with it! I've had some of mine with low enough figures that they would have passed a CAT test and they've been fine.

Certainly doesn't sound like it's unburnt fuel either at just 99ppm HC.

However, that was then and this is now and if it's stinking that badly of fuel then it's either got to be leaking somewhere, popped a breather pipe off, or it's running sufficiently high CO or HC. Check the hoses and under car lines very carefully - perished hoses or sufficiently rusted pipes will weep fuel and stink but not drip or obviously leak.

hi all,

Weser I'm in Ipswich near the A12 just past the BT tower(if you've ever seen it!)

Jackherer- I will pop round - but it will have to be in a couple of weeks as im busy with work atm.

Anthony- it Starts fine- and idles a little high -about 1000 rpm- but its steady and doesn't hunt (unless the weather is really hot!)- so maybe I shoudnt mess with the mixture

Tomorrow i'm going to get it up on some ramps and give the fuel lines a good look over

Will let you know

Many thanks

Popping or chuffing though the inlet and a rough uneven idle is a sign of it being lean. I would turn the mixture screw a half turn out and see if it improves. That way you can put it back to where it was if no improvement

It's in/clockwise to richen.

As for the smell of petrol...how bad is it? I have a slight smell usually when warm and at idle but I've always assumed this was normal.

Yes because you decrease the air. I'm

Used to tuning su carbs so was adopting that principle.

Before altering the idle mixture to richen it up, I would be having a real good check around for air leaks. If there are air leaks then richening the idle mixture is addressing the problem not the cause.

Update- Sorry this took so long

Had the pug on a rolling road. As soon as I drove into the garage the guy said - well your distributors knackered. He took it to bits - no springs in the bottom just iron filings. Serviced it- and then ran the car on the rollers to set it up.

First run prior to distributor service - 90bhp - after 107bhp.

It seems the whole set up was miles out, it picks up great now, very stable idle and no fuel smell!

Thanks all for the advice

Is that at the wheels and which engine?

I take it they checked and adjusted the afm too?

No mate actually that wasn't at the wheels. it was 97 at the wheels.

He adjusted the mixture screw on the AFM but didn't adjust anything inside the AFM.The car is getting on a bit now at 237K. He did say the fuel pressure at high revs was poor and thought the pump was probably to blame.

Also said the injectors needed a clean.

Engine is a D6B

Also the popping etc at the exhaust has gone- it actually sounds ok for the first time in about 6 months

The garage is well known and the guy has a good reputation 2 hours in there and the distributor service was £80 which I thought seemed Ok.

Still quite down on power after the distributor has been serviced. Have you tried having a compression test done?

I did a test about a year ago all cylinders roughly the same (I forget the figure)-1 of the cylinders was about 15psi lower than the other 3.

Guy at the garage says he can get most of the power back but isn't going to do anymore until pump is sorted and injectors cleaned
