Bloody Xu10J4Rs Cam Cover Gasket

Recommended Posts

shalmaneser

Mine's actively spraying oil onto my exhaust manifold now after I attempted to fix a (minor!) leak and the gasket came away from the cam cover in my hands!

Has anyone had any luck cutting their own gasket using something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GASKET-PAPER-3MM-THICK-OIL-AND-WATER-RESISTANT-2-X-A4-SHEETS-/171223816819?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item27ddbc1a73

I'm going to give it a shot and see how it goes I guess locating it may be an issue?

I could also knock up a drawing and sell rubber gaskets pre cut if there's interest - I'm a bit surprised no one has done this before.

I believe an alternative solution is to face off the cover so that it will clamp down totally and use RTV, there are raised parts to prevent the bonded seal from being squashed totally.

I would use cork.

Any particular reason? I'd probably use high temp rubber actually as opposed to this paper.

I've used it before on many other engines and it works well, Gortex gasket material is fantastic too but I cant get it from work anymore.

I actually managed to make my own gasket using a sheet of 2mm nitrile rubber. Cut off the sealant, then cut the gasket to the face of the cam cover. I glued it on with superglue after rubbing down with sandpaper - cyanoacrylate is actually highly oil resistant and works well with nitrile too.

I then used standard loctite sealant on the head after cleaning that up with a razor blade.

Only cost me £6 for a sheet of nitrile off ebay - enough to do both cam covers.

i had trouble sealing mine but in the end i used some loctite i think it was this......

just make sure you give a nice thick layer of it and apply it to the head rather than the cam cover as i found it lined up better. sounds stupid but definitely helped!

havent had any trouble from it since!

Cam cover gasket is bonded to the cam cover on the GTi-6 and not available separately.
