Nice work on Adams car.

Craig, claying is easy and only needs doing twice a year. Not too much outlay for good results.

This is really good, I like how you've shown it in stages as you go. You got me on the 2 bucket wash a while ago and I really like the grit blockers in the bottom. I bought a clay bar kit over a year ago and never used it as I've heard horror stories about going through the paint. Would you recommend the mitt for first timers and then the clay bar later on, or is there no need if the mitt does the job?

Hi Stephen.

Picked up the grit guards from eBay for about £5. They are designed to to keep an inch of so of 'still' water in the bottom of the bucket. This is to stop larger bits of dirt/grit stirring up as you rinse your mitt in the bucket.

Some say not needed and they don't do the job they say they do. For a fiver it's not going to break the bank.

Adams car was not very dirty on arrival but you can still see the difference in the buckets.

I would recommend the mitt for 1st time users. They are very unforgiving. On heavily contaminated cars I have had marring in the past.

Not really a problem if you are going to machine polish afterwards I find.

If you used a clay mitt there is not really a need for a bar.

I have 3 bars but doubt I will used them again.

Craig.

I have probably used this mitt on 10-12 cars and it is still going strong.

A clay bar would not have lasted so long. I used to use 2 or 3 50p sized lumps on each car before, so a bar would last for about 7-8 cars.

At about £15 a bar. The mitt is cheaper over the long run.

Right. Where were we?

Ah yes near side.

Before.

20140718_181123_zpsxv95ugzh.jpg

Looks like has been playing etch-a-sketch on the primer at some time.

20140718_181134_zps3nkwdnvb.jpg

I also had a bit of red come out on the wet sanding. This indicates that there is no clear coat on top of the paint.

Therefore, I will drop down to a softer pad and softer compound, polishing compound rather than the refining compound.

The no hiding swirls of light.

I'll keep you updated to how it goes.

I put on a bit of detailing tape on the trims.

1. As this are a good set of trims and do not need plasticare.

2. To keep GLPoomobile happy. ;)

New pads please.

There was no transfer from the bonnet.

Right to go softer and slower.

Plasticare on rear panel badges.

20140718_200133_zpsveumbbcr.jpg

Although, 1.9 is smooth rather than textured and not taking the plasticare.

That's it for tonight folks.

5am start and not finishing till 7pm due some hose waving people going on strike.

Tomorrow I'll try and get a bit of the arse done. ;)

Seriously good thread and seriously good work mate. Looks like it's gonna be amazing once finished. I had my bonnet wet sanded and it really does make a massive difference even if it takes an age!

Cheers ATK.

The comments keep me going.

Wet sanding fixes a multitude of sins. Although, I have never done a whole panel. Hours and hours and hours...........

Talking about comments. AdamF has kept me going with almost non stop WhatsApp comments. ;)

It's all good though. :)

As a quick side note, don't tell Teestuff or Goliath! I have been giving the seats a going over. I don't normally do insides in a day.

The leather is like sand paper. Very very dried out.

Each night I have been treating the seat lesther to Gliptone Leather Cleaner and Conditioner.

Drivers seat at the top after 1 night treatment.

Does not show too well on my phone camera but there is a mark difference.

An the smell is to die for. Real leather smell again. Mm mm mm mm.

These detailing threads are great, I love the proper build threads and the work and knowledge people have on 205's never ceases to amaze me (like Tom Fentons build for example) but I like threads about paintwork and detailing more probably. Really need to get my arse in gear and get a DA and learn myself. I'm really picky about the car being clean, trim dressing, have always hand polished/glazed/waxed etc but never taken the step to use a DA.

Keep the threads coming dude, great work, love it.

I imagine you are a member of www.detailingworld.co.uk forum?

There are loads of us freaks there. ;)

In regard to use of a DA I can fully recommend looking up The Junkman on YouTube.

I have mentioned before in regard to the people that can rebuild/replace/re tune engines that I could never do what they do.

I have a couple of 'simple' jobs to do. Electrical wise. It terrifies me!!

I really think I'm going to get a mitt now, you've convinced me! I like how your threads read and love all the photos.

What your doing is an inexpensive way to make these true older icons look good again. There are a lot of restoration projects at the minute with full resprays being undertaken, but not everyone can afford or have the time to have this done. Whilst I would love to have mine resprayed I try and keep it looking reasonable by cleaning It the best I can and treating the plastics etc. I hope to be able to get results on mine like you have.

I think your doing a really good thing for other people by spending your time and effort for very little money.

Keep up the good work!

Steve

I just want shiny shiny 205's out there!

Although, I would not say inexpensive for the gear/collection I have built up. ;)

A respray could have been cheaper. :)

Spot on Stephen, if a respray is too expensive then a proper detail does make an amazing difference.

My current, and keeper, is red. The wife said the other day its a "proper" gti because its red. She was never keen on my steel grey or Miami. I on the other hand did but I think I do prefer cherry when really clean.

Always had a hankering for black one but never anything decent about when I've been on the lookout.
