How To Fit Steering Column Rubber Grommet?

Recommended Posts

brian j

I feel like I'm missing something here...

Since I bought the car the steering column rubber grommet in the bulkhead by the clutch peddle has been loose, not in its hole.

I have had a few half hearted attempts to fit it back with no success so at the weekend I thought I'd give it a proper go and it has defeated me. I can't get it back in. It looks to be in good condition. I have tried lubricating the lip and pushing from the inside/pulling from the outside with no joy.

How do you guys manage it please?

I'm a little embarrassed that I would happily strip and rebuild most parts of the car but can't work out how to fit a grommet...

B.

I think the trick is to install it without the steering shaft through the middle. Allows you to manipulate it that bit more .

As above - much easier doing it before the lower column is in place.

Not what you wanted to hear having fitted the PAS rack etc already I'm sure

No need to look so  Anthony! :D

Oh well, at least the dash plastics etc are still out. I'll pull the lower column out and see how I go with it.

Thanks all!
