Average Price Shocker

Not wanting to cover old ground but As you may or may not give a f***, I'm looking for another car at the moment. Just out of interest I clicked on the 205 section in the pistonheads classifieds as I thought a wee gti daily might be quite fun (read as a s*it load of hassle). Anyway, only 19 cars listed with 15 having prices. Not all GTis, there's a Roland Garros and a few CTis thrown in. Added it up and the average price is ..............

Just shy of £5500

Mental.

I will add that at least one of the cars listed has been for sale for a very long time, has been discussed here before and appears to have dropped at least £5k in price.

Not cheap cars anymore. They're creeping up in value at a steady rate now, for decent ones anyway. You'll always have knob heads trying to sell s*ite for top money though.

Good luck but I wouldn't expect any change from around 3k to get a good un.

Sign of the times & supply and demand etc. That said there are still some sensibly priced ones out there, you just have to keep your eyes peeled. I find that pistonheads has a lot of dreamers on there too.

From my eBay and Pistonheads browsing, generally I've found that 205 GTIs are pretty much the cheapest hot hatches of that era.

Astra GTEs, Escort XR3is and Turbos, XR2s, Renault 5 GTTs, even Novas - all seem to generally outstrip the 205, particularly at the lower end of the market.

What I'm getting at is that you can pick up a rough but useable 205 for under £500 - which you'll struggle to do for many of it's contemporaries.

I've bought a 205 van and a roland garros recently, both for around £300. Not Gti's I know, but both quite rare models. The RG needs a bit of work but the van is almost perfect!

GTIs are a different proposition though.

I personally think that people get a bit too hung up on the little bit of extra plastic trim ;)

:D I agree, to a point, but you know certain models are worth more than others for various reasons. A mint cherry 1.9 is worth nowt compared to a 1FM special but they are ultimately the same car. As for 1.9 v other models..the 1.9 is THE 205 thats revered, remembered and referred to by press et all. I love all of em to be honest and would kill for a 205 XS in red like I used to own.

I think one of the reasons that 205's can still be found at low prices compared to those mentioned above is due to the rustproofing they received from new and hence how many are still on the roads. All the Fords and Vauxhalls rotted for fun in comparison and hence are now very scarce. A mate of mine used to be into Astra GTE's, which at the time were a common sight on the road and could be bought for £750 odd back in the mid. 90's. As they have rotted away they become genuinely rare (not eBay RARE, which is different!) and hence more valuable.

I agree, it's a supply and demand thing. There are a few 205 projects with semi-serious metalwork done on them, but just look at the average XR2 project which basically involves a new chassis every time!!! I see a couple of 205 gtis a month on the road I reckon, when was the last time you saw a R5 turbo?!

Looking to shift mine soon and it's so hard to price up a 16v conversion! Kind of wish I'd kept it standard but it's been a lot more fun with the extra power so I guess that's the trade off...

Astra GTEs rusted and they were engine donors for various applications so they had no chance really.

Yep. Back in the late 90s/early noughties you could get 8v GTEs for pocket money (although they would be a bit shabby) and 16vs for around £1500 IIRC, but even then they were getting a bit scarce. I actually didn't plan to buy my first 205 GTI, and wasn't even massively in to them at the time. I'd actually gone to look at a Mk2 Astra SXI that was for sale for less than a grand (this must have been around 2001/2002), but it was tatty and the guy had the 205 for sale as well, which I bought instead.

I've not seen any Mk2 Astra, let alone a GTE, on the road in christ knows how many years now.

Tbh they are out there, i bought a rough silver GTI as a trim donor for my red one in March for £350. The trim is pretty good and the shell solid as a rock, just got a knackered engine, but it even came with a spare! :P

I've just seen this one on ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151368344753 - £8k and they haven't bothered with any description at all, not even an explanation for why the front bumper is so badly 'fitted'.

Isn't that the car that was on the forum that had a smash not so long ago ? Might be wrong

You're bloody right mate!

The original owner is a member on here, I think he got around 9k for the insurance payout so presumably it's catc/d.

I think it was rear ended but I could be wrong.....

Is that definately the same car as the ebay one? some sneaky questions to the seller if it is would be interesting to gauge honesty...

Someone should ask for pics of the boot floor.

Have you got a link to the thread about it? Was the front damaged as well? It seems odd that someone would do a good enough job (at least cosmetically) on the rear then leave the front so misaligned.

Below is the guys link to the pictures of the car pre and post damage. I don't think it was damaged at the front but it doesn't look right.

If you search back in the general forums here around 3 or 4 pages you'll find it under "values - controversial"
