Manifold/downpipe Clearance

Recommended Posts

Kane

Hi all

I'm in the middle of fitting the exhaust downpipe to my xu9j4 engine in the 205 and wondered what is the minimal clearance recommended between the downpipe and bulkhead?

Currently I've chopped the flange off the downpipe and began fitting it to the Manifold with the Peugeot exhaust fitting kit. The thing is the flange itself is only mm's away from the bulkhead already. Is this too close?

I've seen on other threads that some people have had the seam begin separate due to heat caused by the downpipe which I'd ideally like to try and avoid.

I did buy the engine and ancillaries being told it had come out of a 205 so should be a straight transfer which led me to believe that the exhaust Manifold had been altered to suit but now I'm not so sure.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers

Kane

Quite possibly was in another 205 - the tolerances between different shells are awful in my experience and I've personally removed an Mi from one car where it fitted perfectly and dropped it into another where it was jammed hard against the exhaust tunnel!

A few mm clearance will almost certainly end up contacting either on-off throttle (in the vertical plane) or on turning (on the horizontal plane) so you'd be wise to try and make more clearance if at all possible.

Thanks for the quick reply Anthony.

I'm not sure there is any more clearance to be had unless I grind away at the thicker portion of the downpipe flange itself. Would this be recommended?

How much would you say is an 'acceptable' amount of clearance to prevent anything fouling when up and running. I am running full uprated bbm mounts if that makes a difference.

Does the manifold look like it has been re-angled and welded?

Not 100% sure I'll get some photos and upload just now, just a bit difficult to get a good enough shot to see everything.

The outlet of the manifold does not sit Central to the tunnel, it's over towards the drivers side about an inch

Thats normal dhe to the gear rod, doesnt look like its had its angle altered though, and looks like a fair crack in the weld too!

I'm assuming the flange of the manifold should be angled so it is pointing more towards the tunnel to allow the downpipe to meet and then angle again down the tunnel? Does anyone happen to have any photo's of a correctly modified manifold?

Crack?! Whereabouts do you think you see it Mei? I've had a look again but can't see anything.. Maybe I'm just blind!

I assume he's talking about what appears in the photo to be a crack on the weld between the collector and flange, just downstream of the bright orange rust spots.

spot on Anthony, right around the edge of the weld.

I've had a quick poke about and I think it might just be the photo as I cannot see any form of crack either on the flange or collector side of the weld

That manifold isn't sitting right so it's either std or been re-angled badly, Need to see the part where it bolts onto the head, if there's weld around each pipe then it's been done, if not then as said it would be std

Just had a look at the manifold again and no weld marks so looks like like it hasn't been re-angled at all. Before i stick up a wanted ad has anyone got a re-angled manifold with/without downpipe that they'd sell me?

Not too sure my welding capabilites are at the standard to be able to have a go at the full manifold myself

I have a angle plate at work which if interested drop me a message, Also worth checking the join in the middle of the manifold as they are prone to cracking.

If the engine was in a 205 it sounds like it would have been tilted
