Driveshaft Rebuilding?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, I'm running 309 GTI driveshafts on my 205 rallye and they have been on there around 5 years now and done bags of track days without a problem but at Castle Combe the other weekend out on track I had mega vibration all of a sudden and ended the session. Back in the pits I noticed the two bolts that hold the right driveshaft in position had come completely loose. I tightened them back up hoping that it was a quick fix but yet still had mega whole car vibration!

I drove the car back slow and under 40mph it was ok, it then sat on the drive for a week as I headed straight off to the alps mountain biking and just got back this morning. I need the car sorted for Pugfest on sunday yet I know motor factor replacement driveshafts normally are incorrect or they really don't last long! plus GSF and ECP don't keep them on the shelf so my thoughts were to rebuild them.

at this stage Im not sure if its left or right, however id assume it was the inner CV joint on of them, probably the right failing to shake the bolts loose in the bearing housing.

My question is ive got a good reliable pair of shafts and I'd rather rebuild them but where have people bought new CV joints from and did they last?

its a 200 mile round trip to Pugfest plus several runs up the hill, with a decent amount of power to run through them I don't want s*itty shafts!

Ash

When I get home tonight ill be pulling the shafts out to find out which joint, however I'm running short on time to get things ordered up, delivered and sorted ready for Pugfest.

Not what you want to hear, but my experience is that it will be one of the tripod joints causing the problem, and you can't buy the joints separately. But before stripping anything get hold of the shaft near each joint and have a good push pull to find any play.

Play found in nearside inner joint, removed and under the cv boot lots of needle bearings floating. New shaft then.
