Mi16 Cooling System

Recommended Posts

Hi, has anyone got a fix for high running temps?

When stationary after a short blast temp creeps over the 5th marker (90 deg's) and the fan kicks in before it reaches the 6th marker (100 deg's).

I'm running what I think is a standard Mi16 stat rated to 89 deg's, rail at back of head is connected, & oil cooler removed.

temps look and sound normal, though you can fit an 83 degree thermostat and a lower temp thermoswitch.

That's a standard 8v style thermostat btw not an Mi16 specific one.

82/83 degree 'stats are readily available and cheap which will lower the normal running temperature, and a lower rated fan thermoswitch will lower the temperature when the fan engages.

Cheers guys, I wonder what the engine is meant to run at / what an actual Mi16 stat is rated to?

I'll try a lower stat as suggested, make the rad work harder. Any ideas on a reg number to source one that's the right diameter and temp?

I've got a genuine Peugeot 1.9 Mi16 'stat here on the shelf and it's rated at 88 degrees.

I tend to use 83 degree 'stats in most XU's without any issue.

QTH355K is the part number of the pattern (Quentin Hazell) thermostat I have always used in the past as they're readily available, cheap and do the job nicely. They're rated at 83 degree and include the rubber seal - it's meant for an 8v and doesn't have the extra bit that Mi16's do, but works fine nevertheless.

I normally couple that with a purple banded thermoswitch which has the fans coming on at 92 degrees.

Cheers Anthony, I need to come up with some harder questions to ask you!

QTH355K is coming up as 89 deg's though?

Opps, well spotted - I actually meant QTH332K which is the 83 degree one

(QTH355K is listed as the alternative, and I copied the wrong part number in the post above)

Cars running great now, replaced 89 deg Stat with a 82 deg - QTH332K.

Also removed the blanking strip out of the front bumper grill to allow more air flow over the rad.
