Disappointing Festival Of Speed

Recommended Posts

Went to the FoS yesterday and it was wonderful as usual, especially to a prospective Maserati owner, but the lack of fuss made about the 30th anniversary of the 205 gti was most disappointing.

Beyond a "best picture of your 205" competition and the tarty 208 special edition, there was nothing!

Mazda had a huge stand specifically to celebrate 25 years of the MX-5.

I did see Loeb monster the hill in 44 seconds though, which was pretty spectacular.

The problem I see is the MX5 of today has a lot in common with the first MX5.

Same applies to the golf Gti (though they did stray a little around the mk3 and 4,)

Their target market is the same people who bought the original so it makes sense to advertise using an old and comparing with the new.

Doing this with Peugeot kind of works against them, because it shows how bad they are since they can't create a car that tops the 205 gti.

In short I'd sooner have a new Golf Gti or MX5 than an original one. But I'd sooner have a new 205 over a 208!

Is it that big deal?

Manufacturers tend not to look back these days.

I won the 205 competition and went up the hill in the new 208 GTi limited edition, which was nice :) I did mention the fact they didn't have a 205 on display though and expected one to be. They did have a big (ish) picture of my car though.

I thought the 30th anniversary was for the GTi badge not necessarily the 205 GTi?

Either way I would've been pretty un-impressed wit the lack of a minty 205.

Don't know what your complaining about, the 208 Gti has coloured lights running along the moon roof!

I was there and never even considered the 205 anniversary; the Mx5 has a much larger world following and is still in production.

100 years of Maserati and 120 years of Mercedes, the latter with a car on display that is priceless although Bonhams reckons it would go for £2 billion.

Sir Chris Hoy wasn't the only crash, there was another at that bend,

Disagree, It actually works "for you" as it proved you got it right to begin with... remember Peugeot were competing directly against the Golf GTi at the time... and beat it... that counted for a lot in the decades to follow...

The modern Golf lost it after that.... they are just after-thoughts, 4 motion etc... uses the Audi 4wd system redesigned to accomodate the transverse layout, hence the daft name or they would have called it Quattro like the real thing (inline drive direct from the crank)... MK1 Golf, legend, will never forget you

Its not an audi 4wd system, its a Haldex system, as used by volvo and a few others.

My personal highlight was a granny on Thursday side stepping the clutch in a convertible 108 thing.

I went on Saturday with my son and really enjoyed it. All the previous times I've been were on Fridays, and had concerns over how busy it would be over the weekend. Apart from the crowds massing around the F1 cars firing up, it really wasn't as busy as you may expect. Saw the Surtees F1 car bin at Pheasantry, and the Nascars were awesome. One of them was laying serious 11s down the track.

But, I get the impression plenty were there to pose (note females dressed for a day out to Ascot and blokes in blazers and pointy shoes) rather than take interest in the petrolhead mecca Goodwood has become.

Very disappointed in the Peugeot stand. Headed over that way in afternoon, both of us keen to see if there was a special for 205 Gti anniversary only to be disappointed. Had a sit in the 208 GTi, nice place to be but why is the accelerator pedal 2" below the brake pedal? I may be wrong here but unless there is immense travel on the brake pedal heel & toe is a no-no on that car.

Plenty more fun in the BMW stand, sat in all the M cars and the new i8 which looks stunning. Fell in love with the Alpina 330D too, nearly keeled over at the £55k price tag.

Excellent round-up of the day.....managed to blag a sit in the Mercedes F1 car that went up the hill. My boys face was priceless when he got let in the Mercedes garage. Thanks Mercedes :)

The most disapointing thing I find about all Peugeots is the quality. It's something other manufactures have improved on over time.

I just know if I bought a new Peugot or Citreon that after 3 years it will have problems or it will look tired, where as I don't seem to get that impression from other manufactures.

It's as if Peugeot's tatic is to make disposable cars that forces you to pay extortinate prices for parts made from plastic that you find on the top dinks in KFC, or buy a whole new car.

If I buy a new TV and it lasts 3 years, Id consider buying a different brand next time. Unless the same brand had something others don't.

So why buy a 208 as it has nothing more than the Golf or the fiesta has.

Okay, I've picked it up wrong then from a couple of VW/Audi mechanics I know, they've said that's the main reason why the Golf couldn't use the Audi 4WD system which makes sense.

I agree with all of that... I wouldn't buy a new Peugeot either or any other car from the mainstream manafacturers, although I do like the look of the new 408.

Just don't like modern cars, they're mostly dull, heavy, uninspiring and oversized... for me it seems these are the main reasons they achieve safety these days, of course there are many exceptions, I like the way Ford have went.... with the RS Focus etc, at least they are trying to give you something modern from the past compared to the seriously dull R32... I don't think Peugeot are interested in going down this road anymore, they could easily make something as good so there is obviously a reason why they don't. I have brand loyalty too but there is a big price difference between a Sony TV and a new car... so the 205 was not so bad after all as most of ours are still pretty good after all this time?
