Clutch Pedal On The Floor, Clutch Sounding Very Bad At Idle, Rattling.

Recommended Posts

Afternoon all

Was driving along this morning and i went to change down the gearbox, and after that the clutch felt really notchey, and shuddery, seeing a lot of vibration through the gearstick and feeling shuddering through the clutch pedal, only when applying any pressure to it.

Managed to limp in to a lay-by - shut it all off, opened the bonnet, the clutch cable has a lot more slack in it as in I could almost free/unhook the cable from the arm. but the cable wasn't snapped as It still showed resistance.

in my head I had to get the car home then (luckily only 2 miles away).

After starting it back up again, the clutch pedal went to the floor, and wouldn't come back up, getting a gear became impossible, I just kept it in 1st and trundled home. the clutch making an absolutely racket.

no clutch slip or the like.

no nasty smells (burning clutch)

no oil leaks (other than out of the driveshaft seals which is an ongoing issue)

Can anyone point to what might have happened?

Im thinking - the lever arm on the gearbox has broken somewhere, stopping the clutch engaging/disengaging. which is then in the time it took to get home, caused damage to the clutch itself.

Cheers

John

EDIT - Reverse (its a BE1 box/ up by 1st) has always been problematic, crunching occasionally)

release bearing broken up, possibly gone through the pressure plate.

sounds kind of about right! Clutch/gearboxes confuse me.

I guess its a case of getting the gearbox off the car and seeing what the damage is. Is replacing the release bearing a straight forward job/doable on a driveway?

Thanks again

if I have a BE3 lever arm fitted, will this mean I need a BE3 release bearing or still a BE1?

The modification was done by Miles on here when he refurbed the engine/gearbox

wrong john Im afraid, I have a rattley little 8 valver

Thanks Mei! I shall try and reach him over here/facebook

EDIT - Just to make sure I'm not being stupid, this is the be3 kit I would need, if i ended up going through ECP/the like. Im after one with hexagon shape on the inside as opposed to the splines?

I'm not sure what you mean John, but all BE boxes used the same input shaft spline.

the only difference between the 8v BE1 and BE3 kit is the bearing.

link looks correct, if a little expensive.

Have you checked your gearbox bolts? Oil seeping out of the driveshaft seals is a bit of a giveaway that they are seperating, so is the sagging clutch pedal. Had this problem a few times.

I hadn't checked them no,

either way, clutch is shagged out now, as is the bearing by the sounds of it, so ill be retightening the bolts when the gearbox goes back on :)

got the gearbox removed, found a completely ruined release bearing!

would anyone mind confirming this is a BE3 or BE1?

I haven't taken any of the clutch assembly apart yet, but i can see ball bearings wedged in the 'leafs' of the pressure plate, there is also scarring to it so its a new clutch kit jobby!

White bushes? where are they? as i said i haven't taken any of clutch apart yet, what should i look for regarding them?

Cheers

John

The bushes on the clutch fork cross-shaft, especially if the shaft is rusty, adds to the "they're all like that" heavy clutch pedal, when they actually are quite nice with everything replaced :D

That's the updated type with some seals.
