Mi16 Missed Then Cut Out?!?!

Recommended Posts

Jim Slim

evening guys.

couple years ago i carried out an engine rebuild on the xu9j4 engine and had the loom done blah blah.

it has done a good hassle free probs 3k miles since being put on the road. last week i was sitting in traffic and when i went to pull away it felt like it was running on 3, then it done a big backfire then went to poss only running on 2 then got worse, backfired bigtime then basically choked to death, cutout not to start again. i havent had a look at it yet but wondered what you guys thought first to try and save a bit of time haha.

any clues on where to start first would be great.(at the side of the road i checked all lead conections etc) to try start it but havent properly checked for spark or anythng yet.

all leads, plugs, dizzy, rotary arm, ignition coil, ignition amp etc are all brand new too

cheers in advance

Since you've replaced all the ignition parts (though , new stuff sometimes can be faulty also ..) , i'd do an block test/combustion leak test , could be head gasket issue ..

Check the coolant level inside the expansion bottle and oil at the dipstick for possibility of oil/coolant mixing .

Is there any kind of smoke from the exhaust ?

Backfiring trough exhaust or the inlet ?

Out of curiosity , which brand of coil and ignition amp. did you fit as an replacement ? "Intermotor" perhaps ?

I'd start by checking all the brand new stuff first if you've literally just fitted it all.

I.E. Check everything is plugged in fully and make sure the rotor arm is still attached to the cam.

When you turn the key to try to start it does it turn over normally or is it spinning faster than normal?

Other than that you'll need to check for fuel and spark (and compression!) and go from there.

what jack said, sounds like the afm connector has come undone, that or a hose clip from there to the inlet manifold has come off giving you a big unmetered air leak at idle! probably why it didn't show up till you pulled up and idled.
