Gti6 Conversion Power Steering Removal

Recommended Posts

Hey,

Running a GTI6 engine without power steering, am i right in saying I need a specific tensioner and belt?

If so, does anyone have the details?

Thanks

6PK700 belt and a cambelt tensioner does the trick, like so:

I use a TU 8v cambelt tensioner and post with mine.

I have a full set up including alternator, rose jointed linkage, engine mounts and belt for sale. all was new around 2009, and has done less than 15k in total.

should have said - put up a wanted add if you're interested.

I don't think I was clear, apologies.

My Gti6 has still got a power steering pump on it but I dont want to run power steering.

What do I need to do?

Thanks

If that is what you want then fair enough, but honestly it's a backwards step in my opinion.

I agree, keep the PAS and fit a Xsara VTS rack for the perfect setup IMO.

Looks good. Do you supply those?

I made a few sets up a while back but they've all gone.

I could look at making some up if there was enough interest

I was going to use a turnbuckle but not sure if I'd have enough room between the engine and rad.

A dedicated FS/GB thread to gauge interest for a production run would be appreciated :)

205 PAS isn't ultralight like PAS on a new car, it retains the same feel.

I see, I guess I'll need all the reservoir and bits adding as well if I wanted it?

The big difference is the increased ratio steering. The manual racks are awful as they are something like 3.9 turns lock to lock. The power racks can be used with the power disconnected but they become quite heavy like that. The power rack with the power working is the best option for me.

I concur about the 3.9 manual rack..... you need to be like Charles Atlas to go round a mini roundabout, even with a 8V in it.

It feels even heavier in the small bursts i've had in mine with the 16V.

I'm kicking myself for not putting in a quicker rack with PAS during my conversion.

If you're worried about weight go on a diet!

The local rally car guy say's i should fit a quicker rack with some sort of electric assistance from a Corsa, with a manual controlled variable resistor/knob on the dash that controls the feel/weight (at low speeds), which i'll look into in the winter.

I'm not the biggest guy in the world (ask DCC  ) but I find the 2.4 turn rack fine on road tyres and 309 wishbones with an AP diff, I guess it would be nicer with PAS, but once the car is rolling I've not found a pressing need for it.

Maybe if I ran stickier tyres and a plate diff and threw it around a bit more I might.

Miles

PAS is a must with PAS rack's, the weight difference is bugger all and on a road car not worth worrying about, all the 306 parts are a direct fit so it's dead easy too

+1 on the pas from me. I dunno how anyone can drive a 205 with manual steering, going round a big roundabout isn't too bad but as pointed out mini roundabouts are fun and 3 point turns are a huge battle, im surprised the UJ can withstand years & years of so much sideways pressure.

As miles keeps telling me I need a pas rack and after giving it hell around the ring yes I need a shorter rack lol.

I'll be going for the swap very soon I think seeming as this many people give it a thumbs up.
