Broken Down In North London! Help!

Recommended Posts

AdamF

If you were to read my topics on here it would appear that I don't have much luck with cars! That maybe true but I've gotta find it funny.

Ive just broken down in North London, starter will happily turn over but not catch on...

Fuel is getting to the injectors so I assume the pump is ok.

Anyone got any bright ideas?

Also any London people know a good recovery guy who can tow me down the hill back home? Its barely a 10 minute drive to my place.

Hope someone can help!

Its a GTI6 by the way...

Adam

You got access to a multimeter.

Hate to say this, but when i broke down in Islington half a mile from home, I was quoted well over a hundred quid for a tow. It's mostly the callout charge. Luckily I got it started and drove home. Times like that when breakdown cover is invaluable.

if its getting fuel, and cranking okay, then my guess is its an ignition issue.

Check you're getting a spark to each cylinder? maybe a plug has come loose?

EDIT - when i broken down I had to join the RAC by the roadside, It cost £140 (was a £40 discount if you paid by card) - got me home.

First thing I'm gonna do tomorrow is buy some plugs and fit them.

I guess my theory about breakdown cover being a jinx is full of holes!

Other than that I'm not sure...

pull a plug out, put it back in the coil pack, rest it on the cam cover and turn the key if you get a spark then you have other issues

Does it sound like the engine had no compression, ie spinning freely or sounds like it's turning the engine?

Give it a mighty whack with a bar and hammer. My thought is the solenoid is sticking and not throwing out the starter cog

Will try tomorrow.

crank sensor

Ok will look into it. Is it easy and cheap to replace?

fuel pump relay.

Where is the relay? Is it in the engine bay?

Sounded like engine had compression, starter motor was doing a good job until the batt went flat.

Now that I've had a bit of time to think, the car was running a bit rough today. Slight splutter/misfire on early revs and defo felt down on power.

1 minute before I broke down it was making a weird metallic clunk noise, sounded like exhaust. Wasn't very apparent, just sounded a bit different to normal

Fuel pump relay then buy the sounds of it or your fuel pump has died.

Does the fuel pump prime when you turn the key.?

I removed the fuel line at the injector end and turned it over, fuel was getting to it.

Where is the relay and can i get one from Euro car parts?

relay will be near the ecu, you'll only get one from a breakers, a member on here, or peugeot/citroen.

Also to add Euro car parts reckoned they do sell a fuel pump relay and the pic they had on their system looked correct. Anyone tried these?

i have two relays in the house if that helps, i'm not sure if they are fuel pump or ignition they have 12v/25a-03608 on one and 03.601 on the other, both look the same circuit wise.

Many thanks to Justin aka kyepan who popped over this evening and got my car running!

Turns out it was the brown multi plug above the pedals! I must've kicked it at some point.

Back on the road!

That's exactly what caused the problem on my MI. Slightly loose +ve connection in the brown plug. Was an arse to track the problem as it was so sporadic.

props to Anthony, Cheesegrater and Paul13 who basically walked me through the troubleshooting process that lead to the fix!

Any idea what went wrong? Loose wire, loose terminal, plug not fully seated together, or what?

Big feet, low slung connectors, they just needed reconnecting, and then cable tying out of the way.
