Attempted Hot Wire Edinburgh

Recommended Posts

farmer

Very lucky escape tonight.

Had my car broken into at Edinburgh airport, attempted hot wire but didn't get the car.

Smashed cowling and bust door lock only.

s*it, that was close then. Just shows theft of these appears to be on the increase. Time for a new alarm?

Not another one :(

Glad they didn't get it and I hope the damage isn't too bad.

Was it in the car park? All airport car parks I've been in recently scan your numberplate and put it on the ticket and you can't get out of the car park without the ticket for that car.

Just the usual door lock and lower cowling and ignition loom

Sorry to hear that. At least they didn't take off with it.

I'm no car thief - but they must have been dumb chancers to not actually be able to succeed with hot wiring a 205!

Absolutely, bunch of retards.

Cowling and locks can be replaced easily the car couldn't be.

The amount of new parts on that is high.

I wouldn't get another if I lost it.

As above, sounds more like would-be joyriders than professional car thieves.

At least you've still got the car and the damage is comparitively trivial.

Even a properly fitted immobiliser (and most "professionally" fitted ones are anything but in my experience) isn't hard to bypass if you've a reasonable knowledge of 205 electrics. Slightly scary thought for people - most installations that I've seen are easily bypassed within about 30 seconds and needs no special tools or any damage doing to do so

I fear that it's only a matter of time given the rapidly rising values and comparitive vulnerability until these cars do start getting stolen to order by professionals in the same way that has happened with the likes of Mk1/2 Escorts and the like :(

That sucks.

As asked already, what part of the airport was it in? Was it the main carpark by the terminal, or the long stay ones further away? I know the one near the terminal uses number plate recognition on the barriers, but I imagine there's a few easy ways to overcome that.

I'm glad I brought mine back a few months ago and stuck it in my garage. The underground carpark it was in for the last few years wasn't the hardest to get in to by any means, and it had cards/flyers left on it a few times from scrap car dealers, plus an attempted break in (door frame bent) a few years ago in that car park.

That's awful but at least they didn't get the car. I'm supposed to be using that carpark in a couple of months time (not leaving a 205 though). Makes me nervous now.

Steve you will know it was RHS weekend.

The car was in there car park right beside the airport.

Should of clarified that.

Got the car home safe, going to investigate further when my hangover bogs of.

Only thing they stole I can see is my phone charger

Some take the Mickey but I've always used a disklok in my 205's. I think they are a good deterrent. As someone else has said, as these 205's gain value they will also become more desirable to the thieves.

I need to sort something.

Normally I would take the DS3 to these events but the brakes are not bled !

rotor arm is always a good one, ain't going nowhere without one - plus an electrical cut-out for the battery, just take the key with you... some kind of high amp discharge booby trap would be the best deterrent though, South Afrika style :)

Sub-human scum.

I remember I came out of the house one morning to find my 205 xs had gone. I thought someone was taking the p*ss and moved it :D.

It had been stolen and used in a burglary. Lucky I got it back with some damage to the door rubber and ripped out cowling. The exhaust had also taken a smack where it had been driven up a kerb. I just felt lucky to get her back! It makes me laugh to think that when they nicked it they probably thought it was a GTi as it had all the side mouldings fitted.

I will take a photo of the ignition loom and let you see the pigs ear that was made.

With it being a farmers event we all know each other and have been supplied a few names who have been "at" it this weekend.

I also heard a BMW was stolen with the chaps passport inside, missed his holiday as well as the car going walkies.

Ah, I wasn't even aware that the Royal Highland Show had been on! We're going to a car show at the Ingliston show ground next month, so I'll be extra careful of leaving anything on view in the Volvo.
