Clio 182/172 Pads In Gti-6 Calipers

Recommended Posts

fliprio

Evening all, I was about to order my Carbone Lorraine pads this evening and came across a few posts on the 306 forums about Clio 182/172 pads fitting the Gti-6 calipers and since they are £60 cheaper I thought it worth a look.

Not much pops up on a search - has anyone tried these?

They are about 1mm differnt in width and a slightly bigger pad area

Same calliper as on the back's and load of early clio's, Megane's and the R5T used the same callipers too.

Just use new disc's and all is good, I only use Renault pads now due to the price

Miles, I take it you mean the front calipers, Renault front pads in gti-6 front calipers?

I take it the new discs is due to the pad area being different and if your discs are lipped? my discs are quite new so no lip yet as they are less than 1000 miles old

I had thought the extra mm might make them rattle more, give that the CL pads dont have springs/rattle clips it might make it worse

The pads should have what I call the bird (How you draw a bird at school many years ago) at the top, I have had some Mintex & Pagid pads sent like this but I sent them back to get the fitting put on

Does anybody know the correct part number for Mintex 1144 for a Clio pad? I'm a bit confused, think it should be MDB2561?

Hope you're not ordering rc5+!

Been reading some horror stories about the pads coming away from the back on loads of examples

Well, I'm just looking for some decent pads for the daily GTI-6, apparently, the renault pads (they are listed for laguna and safrane too) are cheaper, but not sure about the correct M1144 number.

Its probably people using them outside of intended purpose. They are a race pad and the pad material is unsealed. They are not designed to cope with environmental issues such as water soaking into the pads then being heated up. I think the water expands and damages the pads. I'm not totally sure why it only happens to one or two people. I ran them on my road car fine and the car was driven daily, but I dont sell them to pure road cars these days, swaying them towards other brands like Winmax, Ferodo and Mintex amongst others.

So do both front and rear 172/182 pads fit? I have gti6 fronts and 205 rears

Kev - Seems silly that they market them a a race pad when, if that's the case, what market is the RC6 supposed to attract.

Surely CL realise car enthusiasts will use the pads on the road, and simply saying they are race pads only in the event of failure is not acceptable, and would constitute negligence if it is ever tested in court. Well done to you though for taking responsibility to whom you sell to though, as not everyone hangs around on forums and won't be aware of these issues.

Sorry to hijack the tread, but what pads would you recommend these days for road and occasional track use. Trouble is my local cicuit (Abingdon) is v. hard on brakes and I set fire to a set of EBC yellows last time around knackered the pad royally (serves me right for buying a cheapish pad but this was only after 10 laps or so). Cold bite is needed so require the best of both world (road/track) - the holy grail perhaps?

RC6 is a race pad too, even more aggressive, used a set of these in a friends car, bloody good however do eat through discs.

I run RC6 pads, although on lotus AP calipers, night and day with the old yellow stuff rubbish I had last year, done a trackday last week with numerous laps slowing from 125, they are awesome. Highly recommended. My car does see the road also and cold bite is not an issue.

Well stating 'For race use only' on the box seems to work for UK law :-D They are working on a road version apparently but I cant see that happening for a while.

The RC6 is their core race pad so what most customers use. We use the RC5+ for trackday users who require a better wear rate where ultimate performance is not really required, or to balance the car. For the rear of the 205 for example or with the lotus to stop the front locking.

For an all rounder you will need to either make a compromise or use two sets of pads. I have a few customers who use standard pads for road then when they get to the track use CL Brakes or similar and just swap trackside.

I could advice a few race pads that work from cold up to silly high temperatures, but there are disadvantages. They usually are very hard on discs when cold and may wear faster too. We've had a few Lotus owners eat their discs in a few thousand miles because they thought race pads were the best!

If your looking at the price range of Mintex 1144's then it's worth considering the 1155's. I bought them in Clio size from Miles and personally I've no complaints about them at all for fast road and driving driving on a GTI6 283mm setup.

I've never liked their brake feel at low temperatures which made them a bit rubbish for early commuting starts and all through the winter months.

For a road driven car are you ever going to get them anywhere near the temperature they operate best at? IMO- NO!

So you may as well save the cash and use 1144's as usually there is something like £20-ish between the two compounds.

I use 1155's on the track and think they are a decent pad, they will put up with hard use, but overkill for a road car in my opinion.

The ds3000 were fantastic, lasted 5 months of road driving and killed a set of new disks.

Now fotted cheapest mintex pads I could find (£9), barely stop when hot, but survived a wet trackday and found them to last 8months so far (though they now need replacing)

Going for a set of genuine items next.
