Changing Oil Is 10W 40 Semi Synthetic The Way To Go?

Recommended Posts

Hheppy

As above, I am getting my hands dirty at last (well it's a start)

Does anyone have any other advice as regards what oil to use?

I have got me a genuine Peugeot oil filter, the last owner changed the oil in May 2013 so we are about due.

cheers

10/40 semi synth oil will be fine. Get a new crush washer for the sump plug as well. Plus you will need an 8mm square tool to loosen and tighten the plug.

For normal road use 10W40 semi-synthetic is fine along with a good quality filter.

Stick your head under first for a look, as I have come across plugs with a hexagon on before now that can be undone with a spanner. But chances are you'll need the 8mm square.

Thanks Tom, I remember years ago crafting my own version from an M10 bolt and it worked a treat, a bit Heath Robinson, but that's the way to do it sometimes ;-)

If you want a Heath Robinson sump plug key take one of the door handles off of your house!

I also use a door handle to do the sump plug and for the timing belt tensioners. :D

I second the new copper washer idea, mine has a very slight drip after my last change regardless of how hard I tighten it.

Ok so I went to change the oil on my pug for the first time this morning.

10w40 oil check

Oil filter check

8mm square tool

Car warmed up, jacked up went to undo the sump plug and the 8mm square tool does not fit the sump plug! Doh! Help?

It's just a little bit to big!

James, I bought it from Halfords, I will have to check tonight what size it is as I can't remember.

May as well change my oil again too, seems like the right time of year again, got some Castrol GTX 10w 40 from Asda on offer recently, £14 for a large can!!

You'll need 4.5 litres for the engine and a tad more in the filter.

I always go for 5 litres of Mobil Super 2000 10/40.

You probably need to clean out the hole to let tool fit

I got a new sump plug from Peugeot (ages ago though) and it takes tool or a 13 spanner-might be worth seeing if you can get one for next time

Clean out hole, grind tool if it's still to big (I made mine out of an allen key that I hit with angle grinder)

Thanks guys, I'm going to go with taking my 8mm square drive with a session on the bench grinder to whittle it down a tad! I have some mobile super 2000 and a Bosch filter to use.

The one I got from Halfords is 8mm, happy whittling!
