Steering Rack Differences

Recommended Posts

Wod

Hi, I understand theres two types of steering rack. One with square type fitment or splined type. Can you tell from my pic as to which one it is?

Also are there shorter ratio racks? Seems much longer steering than my old rallye

Cheers

Can't see your pic!

I'll take a 50/50 and says it's splined though

There are three types of steering rack on 205's and 309's:

  • Spline drive manual (non-PAS) rack, 3.9 turns lock to lock
  • Square drive manual (non-PAS) rack, 3.9 turns lock to lock
  • Spline drive PAS rack, 3.2 turns lock to lock
As far as I'm aware, spline drive non-PAS racks were on older cars and square drive on newer ones, but it pays to check as I've seen several that don't fit that pattern! All 205/309 PAS racks are spline fit regardless of age, but the lower column is different to the non-PAS spline drive.

Non-PAS racks are quite slow and feel like driving a bus after a Xsara VTS rack (2.4 turns!)

That is a splined rack.

That looks like a spline drive to me - the square drive UJ's have a much squarer profile near the clamp bolt.

Xsara VTS racks are indeed power assisted, although people have removed the PAS ram and other parts to make them into a de-PAS quick rack. There are aftermarket non-PAS quick rack options available.

What about the 2.8 PAS as fitted to our Si over here?

What about the 2.8 PAS as fitted to our Si over here?

Good question - we didn't get that here in the UK, and for what it's worth, it doesn't appear to be mentioned on Servicebox either from what I can tell (unless they're being naughty and using the same part number for different racks).

There's three RHD PAS racks listed on Servicebox:

4000.62 - RHD except monopoint injection (ie this one is on GTi's etc)

4000.57 - RHD and monopoint injection (ie this one is on late XU petrol base models)

4000.P1 - RHD and diesel and XUD7T (ie this one is on TD models)

Be interesting to know more about the 2.8 turn rack as I've no idea why Peugeot didn't fit them to UK RHD models as well if it was a standard factory part given that the UK 3.2 turn PAS rack is a little slow still IMO.

You sure, as I thought the country selector only changed language and pricing?

You can certainly see all the LHD and Euro-only parts still which clearly weren't sold in the UK either, but maybe it doesn't show parts for the export markets such as Oz.

The country setting doesn't filter out any parts. It's only the language and currency that changes.

Blast from the past. Looking at the pinion part numbers, it would appear that power steering racks either came with 7DTS or 8DTS pinions. Thus XU5M (Australian Si) is 8 and GTi is 7.
