ALEX

Im in the process of re-fitting mine.

My project topic might be of help, I'm converting from manual to electric.

It seems straght forward enough and no need for special tools other than a rivet gun,

Are you replacing the entire thing or just the skin?

Its not too hard but will take a while to complete.

Don't need any special tools really, but tools that come to mind you will need will be a 7mm long reach socket at the back top rail,

a paint scraper to scrape all the adhesive off the front rail and padding remains off the top,

if its a new skin cut the sleeves into sections at the front corners and at the rear corners where the hockey sticks go or itll pull the skin over the hockey sticks and never sit right.

For the front rubber seal use a lip of tigerseal all across the front and smother all the side areas so its watertight.

Expect a lot of rust too!

The weather's so hit and miss at the moment so if your car lives outside it might be worth getting a car cover just incase.

I replaced my golfs roof pad and skin and bought a storm force cover to do the job. There's some just as good cheap triple and 4 ply car covers on ebay now for about £30 that will keep it nice and dry.

Wow that looks errmmm.....involved lol I will have to ask to use my dads garage.

Thanks for the fitting instructions henry.

I bought a top section brand new for £75 which came without instructions.

I think best way is to just attempt it but again might wait til summer

Those make it look easy, you've got cables, Inner section and getting the tension on the hood is the main thing when fitting

Is it worth me doing a guide on this now then? I asked about the tension a couple of weeks ago and got no answer.

I guess you have the metal work? This has a huge impact on how it goes back together.

Metalwork? I have a good solid no rust back rail and decent hockey sticks if you mean those.

I need to get the front part stripped off so i can de rust it with my battery charger as its quite bad at the front corners.

Will be starting this next thursday all being well.

Well I made a good start but am having to abandon this due to my front crossmember being similar to swiss cheese, I have sourced a sound replacement but the side channels that go diagonally up the rear windows are really bad and I dont have the time to replace them atm.
