Driving Light Problems Again.

Recommended Posts

iPlod999

So this problem has come up again. I thought I had cracked it 12 months plus ago.

Driving lights are now coming on with side lights, first turn on stalk.

I have had a search in the past and got 'clean the earths'.

I have access to the yellow plug behind the offside headlight. This I clean up a couple of days ago.

Is there another earth? Where is it?

Regards Glen.

There's one on the opposite side in exactly the same place.

I took a headlight bulb out once while the lights were on and when i flashed main beam the driving lights stayed on permanently.

Cheers Slo.

When it says to 'clean up the earths'. What exactly does that mean?

In the past have given it a good squirter or WE 40 and then had a good poke around with a cotton bud.

Is that ok (ish)?

The earth blocks corrode and since the spade connectors that clip onto them have only a tiny tiny amount of surface contact between them the corrosion gets in between them.

So to clean them up you should unclip them all, remove the earth block from the car and either rub all the s*it off them with emery cloth or replace them preferably.

Every peugeot will probably have at least 2 minters inside the car somewhere.

Same thing with the spade connections on the earth wires. Also rub all the s*it from where the block mounts to the inner wing.

Smear contact areas with a little grease and finally (and ideally) after connecting everything back up cover it up with a plastic bag

A much better method to all this farting around is to hack all the connectors off completely then crimp the lot together with a big eyelet and just bolt the eyelet directly to the chassis.

Done the offside block all shiny shiny now. The original bag is still intact so just covered back over.

However, nearside is buried under the shunt box and another box of electrics.

I did try getting this out and there is little play from the wires underneath. With my previous history I am very likely to bugger it up.

Left it for the time being and lights are currently working fine.

This one is a b*stard to access without removing parts. If it ain't broke don't fix it ;)

Generally these dAys it's best to remove thT earth block, cut the ends off the earth wires and re-terminate with ring terminals. Bolt them to the original mounting of the earth block.

Your lights will be brighter, the horn and washers will always work.

Good idea but the ends may still be corroded.

Those same earth blocks were used on Citroen XMs and the early models were recalled because the hydractive suspension was randomly switching between sport and comfort mode. The fix, which was carried out by Citroen dealers, was to cut the multiplugs off and crimp ring connectors on.
