More Starting Issues With 205Gti6 That's Been Stood 5 Months.

Recommended Posts

As said before I was having issues starting the 205, firstly I thought the started was at fault either sticking or jammed 'out' and touch the flywheel. Tested the started today at a mates garage and it's fine works exactly as it should. Oiled it up and put it back on still with no luck. Car does fire the first time it's turned over then just won't fire again just makes an awful noise when turning over my mechanic mate said it's just the engine turning over with the compression etc been heard back through the inlet and sounds worse than it is so no real concern there. We took the plugs out, they were a bit wet so cleaned them up and replaced them still with no joy. Next we tried towing the car it did run for a short time but died again. Got back home put some fresh fuel in just in case and tried again. Going to clean and dry plugs off again in morning as it's probably flooded again but is there anything else it could be?

Thanks in advance seriously struggling here!

spray some wd40 straight into the inlet while cranking it, should fire up a treat if the ignition side is ok, if it wont run then you know its an ignition fault.

Could be be crank sensor? If the wd doesn't make it fire?

Bridlington. The car has been stood but was started regularly till the battery died.

Did you try wd in the inlet?

Sounds like your getting plenty of fuel, so wd40 may not be required.

Have you checked for a spark, whip a spark plug and rest it on the main structure of the engine. If it's flooded, unplug the injectors and providing you have a spark the old fuel will burn off when your turning it over.

I had a very similar problem with mine, and changed the starter as I thought it was goosed but it turned out to be good.

My engine also stood for a while before I bought it.

What was odd on mines is that it started the very first time I turned the key after the conversion, but then starting was a problem and it would eventually flatten the battery. I tried jump starting, joining two batteries together, etc etc.

The problem I had was my battery terminals, connections etc were poorly fitting and dirty.

I cleaned them up and fitted new connection bits and it now starts no problem.

Thanks everyone, I took the plugs out and they were wet(ish) stunk of petrol so I'm guessing that part is ok. Still haven't tried the WD. I will though just to make sure for what it's worth. My guess is maybe the crank sensor is dodgy so going to have a look at that aswel.

If the crank sensor was faulty then it wouldn't normally inject any fuel. To me it sounds like it's either injecting far too much fuel or it isn't sparking properly to ignite the fuel it is injecting, hence running badly and fouling the plugs.

A faulty or disconnected cam sensor does make them quite reluctant to start though, so might be worth checking that, although it should run cleanly once started.

Personally, I'd stick some new plugs in and go from there - don't bother cleaning up the old ones as they'll never be right if it's flooded that badly that they're fouled. NGK plugs are pretty cheap for GTi-6's and they can be a bit grumpy on knackered plugs.

It's the awful noise on cranking that is slightly concerning and the mechanics explaination doesn't fill me with confidence... does it go away once the engine starts?

I know you say the plugs are getting wet so this would suggest you have fuel but are you sure there's plenty in there?

For it to try and fire 1st turn then not again sounds like pretty much out of fuel to me. If there's not much pressure and loads of air coming through the plugs can still get wet but as the fuel doesn't inject properly it won't start. this could also explain it bump starting but not wanting to stay running.

I'd stick a jerry can of juice in unless you are 110% sure there's loads in there.

Rams, i'd check your connections on your battery before doing anything.

I was very surprised how it affected mines.

I had the big moaning noise etc like i think you may have said.... at one point i though the engine may have seized.

I think the problem is that the high(ish) resistance of a poor connection causes a volt drop accross this resistance, (which doesn't show up when you put a multimeter on the battery terminals.), this volt drop is at it's worse with high current (i.e. the starting current)

The engine will turn over, but the vold drop caused is sufficient not to allow the coil packs/electronics to operate correctly.

It sounds to me that you have a very similar situation.

A squirt of WD40 and she fired literally first turn! Had my girlfriend doing the key I squirted the WD in and it sparked into life! Result! Been messing with it all evening since and starts fine now! Booking blyton park tonight for the 18th, 205 wants to think its self lucky eBay was next step!

Thanks for all the input people much appreciated! :-)

Amazing what that stuff can do, I used it on my turbo before I even began to think about plumbing in the fuel. Once i found spark, a squirt of wd a second and it idled non stop perfectly.

Glad it sorted you out mate ;)

Great you have it going !

Slo, what does the WD actually do? Make the mixture more combustible?

Yea think that's the top and bottom of it just strengthens mixture so it is easier to ignite.

Nah its the propellant in the can that blows out the wd40  extremely flammable :excl:

So, would air freshner work too?

Yes, pretty much any aerosol will start a car.

If you turned it upside down so the air freshner crap didnt come out possibly, polish too infact anything that has a gas propellant would probably do the trick but its no good squirting a liquid in that wont burn, you might as be using a water pistol. Reason I said to try the wd in the first place is gas wont wet the plugs if its flooded.
