Fuel Pump Leaking?

Recommended Posts

ATK

Had fuel pump replaced a week or so ago (new pump, original housing etc), and filled up full with petrol for the first time today.

Noticed a petrol smell in the car, had a look at the fuel pump under the rear seat and petrol was leaking out over the top.

Only does it when the car is full to the max of petrol.

Likely to be the o-ring gasket needs to be renewed between the pump and tank (under the round clamp with the screws)?

Anything else it could be?

Only ask as my mate changed the pump so I havent seen what it looked like. When I siphon some petrol back out it's fine and does not leak.

I had one leaking from the area where the wiring goes into the pump , on top of the pump housing where the wires are sealed with some kind of ruberized goopy stuff .. petrol melted/lifted this substance and it started leaking round the wiring .

Also , some had hairline crack on the joints for the pipework .. and the main O-ring seal tends to be porous as well .

If you've seen it starting leaking all around from the corners , rather than from the top/base , then it'll be the main O-ring seal .. check if all the bolts which fastens the pump to the tank are tight and if theres any of them missing (it's not uncommon for them to break/snap while dismantling or if over tighten) , try to tight all the bolts a little bit more and see if that stops it leaking ... if not either replace the O-ring seal with an new one (if it's still available ?!) or dismantle/remove the pump , clean the base on the tank/pump , clean up the O-ring and smear some anaerobic gasket compound on the O-ring , fit back and tight the screws .. that should seal it , i also had leaky O-ring pump seal and fixed like so , however first attempt with using RTV sealant didn't work so well but with anaerobic compound it worked well (petrol resistant .. i used some Loctite 518 stuff which i had left from repairing outboard engines , it's anaerobic compound/flange sealant commonly used on marine and motorcycle engines , for crankcase sealing on 2 strokes ..)
