Gti6 Misfire At Light Throttle Under 2K, I've Tried Everything

1.6 doesn't have a vss, just a simple speedo drive, you need the dual speedo drive with electronic takeoff as used on early 306's

DAMMIT! I've just heard back from the guy who fitted my engine to the 205 and he says that the gearbox is running the cable type speedo and there is no VSS connected at all. I'm now wondering if this is the problem and what I can do about it. For further background, when I initially picked the car up it wasn't having this problem. It just seemed to gradually appear.. Anyone want a new VSS ..?

you need to fit one regardless if its on the MM gti6 ecu.

It is on the GTi6 ecu.

However (since I didn't fit this engine) I'm in the dark with visualising all these options - how will I mate the cable speedo drive to the gearbox if theres an electronic VSS in the way :) Sorry if I'm being thick here :)

The 'dual' VSS that Welshpug mentioned has an electrical connector AND a space to fit a mechanical cable.DSCF0982-vi.jpg

You can use the rubber 'spike' cable holder from your old speedo cable housing.

Sorry for the thread hijack here but are you guys saying that any GTI-6 conversion that's carried out should have one of these "twin" VSS things fitted to the gearbox and then wired to the ECU?

When I got my donor engine from another car which had been "professionally converted" there was nothing to unplug from near the speedo!? I'm fairly sure the wires will have been chopped off near the ECU plug.

Also the main topic on this forum for GTI-6 wiring help says to leave it (wire 465) disconnected?

I'm confused what to do?

Yes a properly done conversion should have a VSS sensor present, and for a 205 because it has a cable-driven speedo, it needs to be one of the combined/hybrid electrical and mechanical VSS speedo drives.

Without it, you often tend to get a noticeable and annoying flat-spot just off idle and it can be more prone to stalling as you come to a stop, although oddly some cars seem to suffer much worse than others with the VSS missing.

I'm foreseeing doom and gloom when i finally get back to my car - and find that there are no wires to the speedo drive area on the gearbox - exiting loom was modified by the fitter - I bet I'll need to run new wires ...

can anybody please tell me where such wires should run & connect to? Presumably only to the ecu - but what pinouts should they be connected to..

cheers

But reading Miles' comment above, he unplugged his VSS and the problem went away... I have no VSS yet I have this problem. I think I'm possibly on another wild goose chase!

To describe the symptoms again: At exactly the same point on the road every day after starting (some 250 yds down the road) the engine cuts out. It hesitates for a while if the throttle is held steady and then violently cuts back in again - just as if the power was turned off eclectically and then back on again abruptly.

This same thing happens if the car has been driven with active throttle movements and then the throttle is held in a cruising position. IE the power just cuts and after a matter of 3 or 4 seconds comes back in again. It will then be fine for random while...

If I try to 'pump' the throttle when the cutout occurs, the power will come back straightaway but immediately on steady state it will go again.

Its Bloody annoying to drive!

I'd be looking at lambda or a wiring issue.

If it's cutting out just 250 yards after a cold start, it's unlikely to have got warm enough to have started using the lambda yet IMO and hence can probably be reasonably ruled out.

Any reason spooxs would not fit the vss sensor ?

As I said, a properly done conversion should have a VSS fitted.

I can't answer why Spoox didn't fit one - perhaps they got distracted by some horses tethered up outside?

Watch out for a new thread entitled "what are the pin outs for a VSS sensor?" I'll try and find out myself before I throw it out there. I'm guessing, +12v, ground & signal.
