I can't see it making much difference.

The lack of revs this year combined with the turbo set up has muffled the sound

It also looks stupid!

A friend of mine works for Merc F1, it will be interesting to see what they say internally about it.

I see F1 is taking notes from the Bosozoku of Japan:

My father in law went to the F1 in Barcelona.

He was standing on the corner at the end of the straight and said although they were flying teh exhaust sound was note quite what he expected to hear.

However he said it was daft to make it sound something it wasn't.

Apparently the GP2 cars that ran first where way louder.

The GP2 cars run NA 4L V8's that rev to 10k

And that's why they sounded "awsome".

Ferrari must be rolling on the floor in anger over the lack of sales of their ear defenders. is there no wastegate noise? no pops or bangs when on overrun at the end of a straight? I'm sure a few mapping tweaks could be made! They are still loud i'm sure with no silencing other than the turbo.

all those tweaks would lead to fuel use, and that's the big thing their all trying to avoid, their rolling off the power into the corners, if you compare the onboard mid race their all just in some kind of super granny eco driving mode. the cars might be sideways, but into the braking zones their behaviour is very different this year.

Thing is we've got used to the v8's and previously v10's and v12's. Hearing that Ferrari v12 was awesome.

Back in 1988 and prior the engine sounded awesome. It was a turbo and that I what we knew. Although they ran NA cars (there was a championship for these) I don't remember them making a noise.

I remember Murray introducing the 1989 season, Mansell won the opener in a 640 Ferrari (first paddle shift f1 car) Murray spoke about the different sound of the NA cars

I won't get into the 'better in the old days' argument becuase like it or not - F1 has changed. The new powertrains are much higher tech than years gone by and they have a different sound.

What would be criminal (and is being looked at) is trying to artificially create sound just to please the crowd. Everything and I mean everything* on a race car should be to enhance the performance and bring down lap times within the set of rules. Function over form every time.

The race cars we all love the look or and sound of are that way as a by-product of function never the other way round. Trying to make it look good or sound good for that purpose only is vanity and has no place occupying the minds of people who should be thinking about how to make the thing go faster.

I've got no problem with the way they sound - it's just different and it's great being able to hear the other things - the plank scrapping along the road, the tyres, the transmission.. all good.

Far more important - and the reason I'm loving ths year - is that the cars are sliding again. To me that's a thousand times more important than the noise.

I hope this type of interference never rears its head in rallying . I wonder what Colin Chapman would make of this ? Off to the coast now , to watch the NW 200 motor bike races .Sun , Silkolene & Sunoco .

Its already happened to rallying a long time ago, 1600 turbo with mechanical 4wd, or factory spec evos, or 1600 single throttle body fwd cars.

Gone are the days of the s2000 maxi kitcars and the electronic diffed 2.0 wrc cars.

However it hasnt changed grass roots rally one bit really, wrc is a farce compared to a decent single day european mainland tarmac rally.

Special Stage , one day events .Loughgall Festival Of Speed , Lurgan Park and the various local Motor Club rounds and the introduction of All Track cater well for the rally petrol head here. However , any form of motor sport has become beyond the financial resources of most and risks becoming elitist .Generally ,entry lists are low and competitors are more selective about what type of event they want to take on. I agree that wrc is a farce , it's beyond the average . Peugeot themselves have often commented on how the success of the rallying 205s saved their company. Over the years, rallying gave the car manufacturers a huge stick to beat or to guide us with . Mini Cooper , Ford Escort ,Vauxhall Chevette, Opel Ascona ,Peugeot 205 .These cars were easily identifiable to the general public , who could then relate that to a road going version. I'm not advocating going back to drawing with burnt sticks in caves and fashioning tools from bits of stone but I think Bernie E has got the message .Trolley jacks & wheel braces .No NW 200 for me tonight . Faulty TPS .Where's my donkey ?
