Convertible Wind Deflector For £50

Recommended Posts

roccorich

Having seen the wind deflectors from Ebay in Germany for £150 I decided there must be another solution.

So I started looking at making one myself and realised that I am crap at making things neatly so that would probably take lots of attempts and maybe end up costing nearly as much.

So I started looking at cheaper deflectors for other cars on ebay and wondering if I could make them fit, after speaking to someone who seemed to sell lots of second hand ones it turned out he didn't live that far away so went to see him and we spent some time trial fitting a few.

Found that Audi A3 ones aren't a bad fit and they sell quite cheaply as there is little demand for them, so I gave him £40 and went home to make it fit.

Its a really well built thing that folds up to a 1/4 of its size and comes with a bag.

Here's the results.

I'll stick more details and photos up tomorrow but basically 4 studs on the horizontal piece that I have extended.

2 into holes in the b pillar trims I drilled and 2 into the holes already there in the roof mech covers.

As you fold the frame out it wedges into place so no fixings needed. Fitting and removal takes seconds.

The guys in Sutton Coldfield so probably worth you picking one up as it will be cheaper than through ebay.

There are cheaper 205 CTI specific ones that are about £60 delivered from Germany as I bought one a few years ago. They are not as big as the one you mentioned as they do not cover the rear seat. They attach to straps (with the kit) hooked around the rear seat front hinges. No need to drill anything either.

I will try and find the link later.

I've had a quick look on Ebay and can't see the one your on about but that does sound alright if you don't want to drill anything, but I like the solid frame of these ones.
I've picked up a spare set of B pillar covers now so I can always put it back to standard.

If you didnt want to drill you could probably hang it off the roll bar then just use the rear studs in the holes already there.

May have a play with this idea tomorrow.

This is what I've done so far.
Basically there are 4 rubber studs on the horizontal piece, 2 on each side, that would slot into the sides of the car on an A3.
I extended the studs by trimming down some of the rubber stud to make it thinner and sliding on a piece of 15mm plastic household water pipe.
I drilled some 15mm holes in the B pillar covers for the front ones and for the rears used some holes that are there under some plastic caps on the roof mechanism covers .
I then uses some coolant hose to cover the water pipe that is exposed, doesn't look amazing and want to find something neater to do it with, but this was just a quick fix while I experiment.
I have since moved the front studs further back by drilling some new holes as the deflector was pressing on the seatbelt guide and making it tilt and not feed properly, so the vertical section is now tilted back slightly more but I still think it looks ok.
So you place the deflector in the car folded and as you fold it out locate the studs, then when you lock it out it holds in place.
Heres some pictures to explain it better including a couple showing it at the new angle.

I've got that XL one on my CTI and it is brilliant. Dead easy to fit and means you can store things on the back seat easily and stops the car getting full of leaves. It hooks over the rear seatbacks to get it to fit and no drilling required, though there are a couple of pop studs to help keep the tension

I've got the Windesa/Bodi Windschott XL in my Golf cabriolet, it's a fantastic bit of kit and although it seems expensive at £150 it's been well worth it.

It offers a bit of privacy if you leave anything on the back seats too.
