Mongol Rally Steed Spotted. Anyone's On Here?

Recommended Posts

evening all

my mate and I are looking for a 205 to do the mongol rally in, for the 2015 rally.

We have spotted this; 1 months MOT, No tax, BUT it has sprayed wheels. For the money, is a bargain we think? this is where you come in!

what are your thoughts? anyone on here? anything looking bizarre to you? I know its spares/repairs. We;re pretty keen, mainly due to price, and the fact we have nothing to do this weekend. so going to pick up a car and persuading it home seems like fun haha.

Cheers

John

this is our thinking, the ball is in motion! checking we have storage for it to drive home to, hopefully calling them today :D

even if worse outcome happens, ill have the roof (no sunroof) and bonnet, and probably the a couple of other bits off it. seems like a win win!

onwards and upwards!

Cheers

John

I'd prefer a 1.8 na diesel for such a long trip but apart from that I can't see how it would go wrong. I'd take a couple of hubs and shafts maybe? Stick a sump and tank guard on it. Couple of extra hangers on the exhaust maybe? Weld some sort of rack to the roof with a spare set of tyres/wheels. Great little motor. If it's just the two of you I'd remove the rear seats and you'd have ample storage space. Just watch out for weighing it down too much at the back and running it on the bump stops. Possible raise the rear beam a bit to compensate?

has to be a 1.0 sorry - although there were suggestions that the might 1.1 might sneak its way under the bonnet as a bhp figure the wrong side of 50 is a bold statement haha

raising the beam will be happening too, and mud flaps, they always make things look better.

confirming we have somewhere to sorn/work on the car this afternoon. progress indeed :D

I did the Mongol Rally in 2010, I reckon this would be a fine car to use (assuming it kind of already works) I also use to have a 1.4 GT that had done the Plymouth to Dakar rally - it had some good mods like fuel lines e-routed through the car, spotlights and a fan override as well as a sump guard.

Haven't they recently relaxed the rules for this? or is that just the 'Not older than 10 years old' rule?

those are pretty much the mod's we're looking at! with a good roof rack and raising the rear beam. Seems like good fun :D

they've 'devolved' the rules. So its gone back to its basics.

Any age of car, but the 1.0 is the 'limit' unless its barmy!

take some strong gardening wire too. these TU engined cars are a bugger for throwing exhaust bolts where the down pipe meets the center section. just twist some wire through it as a quick fix and off you go.

Could fit a 1360 in that and they would never know.....

Being an E reg, will it be a TU engine necessarily? E reg was the crossover year from the old XV suitcase engine that preceded the TU.

could be either, I've seen an identical car to this with a TU, 4 speed, non arb rear beam, guess where that beam is now :D

How would one tell? Is there the same little metal stamp on the block as with an XU engine?

going to sounds massively dumb (really sorry) what do you mean non arb (anti roll bar) - like without torsion bars?!

has nice skinny torsion bars but no anti roll bar through the middle, common on basic spec pugs, handle brilliantly, corner on the door handles! :D
