Lateral Movement In Rear Beam.

I have read in Wurzels beam guide about 'setting' the torsion bars when rebuilding a beam. He states that, after fitting the torsion bar to the radius arm using the eccentric washer and bolt, you should then wind the stud, on the other end of the torsion bar, fully into the end of the torsion bar. Next is to tighten the nut on the end of the stud to pull the radius arm towards the beam tube, until tight, then back the stud off until it touches the 'plug' in the arm of the trailing arm.

My question is, is this all that stops lateral movement in the radius arm? I ask this as surely there will still be a degree of 'play' in the threads of the stud, therefore allowing the arm to contact, and wear the seal under cornering forces .

I have tried to explain this as well as I can, any questions/answers are much appreciated!!

Yes thats all there is to it, however there is some important info missed out, you need to place a 0.05mm feeler between the seal and the cup on the arm to set the clearance.

 

That guide isnt really correct, all you need to do is push the arm in, then wind the stud till it touches the plug and lock it off with the half nut

 

There wont be any play.

I personally don't bother with the feeler, you can see by eye when the seal is set too tight, then back it off so it's just right.

Thats great thanks, it all just seems a bit 'bodgy', but if it works then thats it!
