Mi16 Engine Out For Resto

Recommended Posts

Supersport2

This is my second 205, but first mi16.

How hard is it to remove the engine and box? Is it worth dropping the entire cradle out the bottom?

I have some rust issues in the engine bay and I want to get access to treat and paint it!

Cheers

Disconnect all the hoses, exhaust, loom. Drop the coolant, oil, gearbox oil out, remove driveshafts. It will now be just on its mounts. Undo them and if you can get/borrow/hire an engine crane its easy just to lift it straight up and out with the gearbox still attached.

You can drop it down, but then you have to lift the car over it. Plus you risk damaging something when you lower it onto the deck.

removing the battery tray will help, I always lift out the top as well, removing the radiator slam panel and fan cowling to prevent damage and make things easier.

leaving the subframe on gives a sturdy stable place to support the shell on axle stands.

Do the driveshafts just pull out? Once you've undone the hub bolts.

Yes, they should come out with little effort. The long shaft has two hook bolts in the lower engine mount that hold the bearing in, make sure you undo those.

As said the long shaft has a intermediate bearing which is bolted in place through the rear engine mount bracket with two little hooky bolts.

If you are not really planning to do anything with the engine/box whilst it is out then I would drop the lot downwards as a complete assembly.

It'll just be to repair a few bits and paint the bay.

Thanks for the help.
