looked like a factory / dealer fit jobbie too!

Given how easy many are to bypass I wouldn't count on that Anthony, as I bet you know!

Dan's E-reg graphite breaker had nicely soldered in wires, however chopping into a bright orange wire 6 inches from the ignition switch, and joining back up to the same wire nearby, and the fuel pump wire 3 inches off the relay and back on behind the same trim panel, was REALLY tricky to trace and disable.

NOT... <_<

THE CAR IS FOUND!!!! Condition unknown, the police just said it's been hotwired, thank you looking out for it and yeah, security is going to be upped significantly before it goes outside the house again.

Great news! get a nice big doberman to sit in the boot :P

Given I've put the reg on this forum post I'll not say how I plan to improve security but there was no immobiliser on it so it was just an easy target I suppose. Spoke to the police this evening who said it appears undamaged, but that they took the interior mirror and a bit of dash trim that had been removed away, to carry out forensics. Apparenty I might get them back one day... I'll find out everything else tomorrow.

Good to hear you got it back. Sounds as though it must have been a joy rider rather than stolen for parts/to order.

I'm surprised you got insuranance without some kind of immobiliser/alarm etc. A Cat2 immobiliser was a prerequisite for my insurance.

It's quite easy to make them un-startable via well placed or disguised cut out switch, albeit giving you a little inconvenience every time you want to drive it. Only thing is you run the risk of a bit more damage should the thief know exactly what they're doing and eventually click that there's a switch hidden somewhere, but hopefully by then they will have given up.

Thanks Tom, that's reassuring. I forget what the deal was with insurance, I might have assumed it had an immobiliser before I picked it up, I'll certainly get something fitted now and maybe add some kind of cut out switch too. That satellite tracking gadet is impressively cheap. I also want to look into something that makes an alarm sound in my house, I figure slowing the theives down is only really effective if they are detected. Will probably need a bigger battery with all the electronics though...

I absolutely swear by having a removable steering wheel. IMO it's one of the best visual deterrents you can have.

You'll obviously need an aftermarket wheel (i.e. Momo), plus a suitable boss, and then a quick release adapter. Mine is a ball bearing style, chavvy type, bought from ebay for about £30 years ago. Some people sneer at them, but it works fine, and my only complaint is the red anodised finish. It does also move the steering wheel closer - the pro being a nicer (bent arm) driving position, the con being the stalks are further away.

Mine was parked on street in London for years and I never had any bother. I lived right across the road from Hackney, and also had Harringey just up the road. My Civic was broke in to a few streets away and I also had my stereo nicked from another 205 up the road, so it wasn't a perfect area. People in my street would sometimes stop and talk when I was working on the car and many people commented on how they'd seen the wheel was missing as they walked past, so it's definitely a noticeable thing!

Someone tried to steal my Phase 1 1..1 XR (god only knows why!) from a housing estate in Guildford a few years back. They simply peeled back the top of the door and pulled the door catch. Fortunately, at this point, one of my neighbours (who happened to be an off duty security guard) realised what was happening, and decided to let his three German shepherds out for a play. We never caught the asshat, but we did recover several pieces of his jeans...

After that little incident, I wired in a covert switch on the fuel pump feeder wire. Dirty simple, and easy to hide.

They said mine was undamaged but in reality the door was bent, the steering lock was broken, parts of dash missing and ignition wiring cut. The clutch was also completely gone and the new handbrake cable had clearly taken some abuse.

Right, the wires to the ignition key have been cut and I assume the steering lock is broken. Clutch needs adjustment so might be a lot closer to needing changed. And of course, delightfully, was charged £150 to get it out of the pound. Could be worse though.

I endured very much the same thing some 8 years ago, if its not too bad the ignition barrel can be split and the lock portion from another not wrecked unit swapped over so you can retain the same ignition key.

thankfully most of the ignition wires are colour coded, so not difficult to solder back together to get it mobile again.

aha! I knew I wasn't going mad when I remembered someone supplying the switches on their own in the past!

however in this case its the metal bit that probably needs replacing which comes with that attached anyway.

Neat are good, they've been doing pug and citroen o.e.m bits for a long time, used to sponsor the rally cars I've serviced for :D

You should be able to claim the fee from your insurance if you are going that way.

Careful on that Neat ignition switch - the picture shows it with a X shaped fitting whereas 205/309 ones are a Y shape.

I remember Chipstick on here had the same issue with one he ordered (not sure if it was Neat though) and ended up getting a used one off me because it wouldn't fit.

Eagle eyes Anthony! I'll get a chance at the weekend to see what the score is, best case is just to solder the wires back but we'll see. Thanks for all the tips folks, it makes it seem a bit more approachable.

Hi, I've got an ignition barrel with undamaged wiring/plugs and the original Peugeot key. Somewhere I have a petrol cap and door lock to go with it. I'm in Edinburgh too - PM me and let me know whereabouts you are!

Ok, I've soldered the wires back together and started it but the bit of trim under the steering column has been ripped off. I'll go and pop a wanted ad. up for it. Nveeate, thanks so much for the offer but I think I'll run it as it is, I don't fancy trying to change the barrel - looks like a bit of pain to do.

No problem - glad you've got it sorted. I don't mind changing the barrel for you, but if you've got it all sorted by resoldering I'd suggest keeping it as it is...that way you avoid having a different key.

There's no need to change the key, you can release the lock then replace the switch unit only. But if sorted then good job done.
