Is My Gti-6 A Tapper?

Recommended Posts

So I'm hoping some people with experience of the GTI-6 tapper's to give their opinion on if I have one or not...

Here's the video: http://youtu.be/TnnJEGOAeYU

It's nowhere near as bad as many I have heard from other people posting video's for the same reason but I cant help but think that she's a tapper and if that's the case I shouldn't be lulled into a false sense of security thinking it's not that's loud so the valves are just a bit bent and it will be fine for a few more thousand miles...

Can anyone confirm my fears? Is there some other form of test that be done to measure the extent of the bent valves or is it a point blank they are bent get it sorted ASAP?

If it's clearly a tapper can anyone suggest somebody in the Midlands that can do the necessary work and a ballpark cost? I'm planning a 2000 mile euro-trip for September so I need to get it sorted over the summer if it needs doing.

An unrelated second thing is that the engine seems very slow to return to idle after coming off throttle, the only thing I have checked is that the throttle cable is running smoothly and that it's not being restricted from returning due to bends in the cable, besides from that it does the same thing when I operate the throttle by hand within the engine bay so I know the throttle valve is being closed quickly. Any idea's?

I would say it's a tapper mate, sounds the same as my xsara used to after someone done a bad job of repairing after a belt snap!

Any idea if the head has been skimmed before? If it has may be cheaper to buy a recon head and chamge it yourself?

Miles

Get a leak down test down, You may have to ring a few Garages as not all of them use the equipment but that does sound bad and from a Video it normally makes it sound allot better from experience too

I have a similar problem with the slower than expected return to idle. I replaced my ICV with another used one i had, and it was much the same. Not sure of the chance of two being knacked.

I'm gonna change my lambda.

Does your car eventually fall to idle then briefly bounce up for a second or so, before finding its feet?

Or rev up slightly randomly?

Also, when I first ran mine, an engine that hadnt been run for a long time I feared the worse of it being a tapper, I ran an engine flush through it and it seemed to quieten the engine down a little, maybe worth a shot for the sake of a few quid and some new oil.

Thanks guys. I will get the leak down test done when the car is back on the road. Will this categorically diagnose a bent valve not seating correctly?

To be honest the idle is fine it just tends to be a little slow getting there, when it gets there it sits there nicely. I might put that on the backburner for now!
