Over Fuelling And Starter Motor Issue

Recommended Posts

ApLeEuXgeot

I have an issue with my project, it's a 205 gti 1.9 (XU9JA).

The car starts and runs but appears to be running on 3 cylinders. When you take the plugs out they are black and stink of fuel. It's definitely over fuelling but I'm not sure what could be causing it.

I'm also having problems with my starter motor running while the engine is running.

Does anyone have any ideas where to start and what could cause both these problems?

Thanks Alex

You need to solve the starter issue first, have you got a multimeter?

It's possible that the starter problem is causing the over fuelling despite the lack of an obvious connection.

I had a feeling they might be connected in some way. Yes I've got a multimeter :)

The first thing to do is check for voltage at the solenoid spade connector on the starter when it is running while the engine is running. If there is voltage unplug the spade connector and see if that stops it spinning or not. If it does stop running you probably have some damaged wiring or maybe a faulty ignition barrel. If it doesn't stop running the starter is faulty. The electrical noise from the starter can cause some odd issues including over fuellling which is why I suggest fixing that first, it could be unrelated but it needs to be ruled out.

I've changed the starter motor for a spare one I had laying around and it's still doing the same and running with the engine. I'm almost certain it's a wiring fault because I've already changes the ignition switch and that didn't fix the issue. I'm not sure where to start with the wiring... Is there a relay for the starter motor??

There isn't a relay for the starter, although people sometimes install one as the lack of a standard one can cause issues.

Has it got an immobiliser? If it isn't the ignition switch or the starter itself I would be looking at an immobiliser next I think, the wiring would need to be damaged in such a way that it shorted to a +12v source which is possible but you would expect it to be live any time the ignition is on and from what you say the starter only sticks on once it has been activated with the key.

could be live with the fuel pump feed in some bizzare wiring mess

Thank you for the advise so far.

I've had a looking at the wiring under the dash and it looks like someone had a small obsession with scotch locks because it's littered with them.

I'm just going to start from scratch because I can't make head nor tails of the mess.

So my next question is, do you know which looms are interchangeabl? It's originally a G Reg 1.6 gti.

Phase 1.5 with gray dash with the ignition coil on LH inner wing.

I've seen this one on eBay. Anyone know if it will match up...

That one will have quite a few differences to yours. You want one from a phase 1.5 GTI of the same age really, the problem is most of them will be hacked up in the same area due to alarm/immobiliser installations. Can you post some pics of yours so we can see how bad it is?

You could always try posting a wanted ad on here for one.
