Wiggle It, Just A Little Bit.

Right,

so when I drive the XS down the road at any speed, if I lift off I get a shimmy back through the steering wheel. I reckon the oil soaked engine/gearbox mounts are fubarred and the engine is moving around too much. Not a problem, I had planned to change them anyway, however, could the subframe be moving around? Would that have an effect on things?

Thanks, Calvin.

In my experience if the subframe is even slightly loose you get loud clanks and bangs as it moves back and forth, normally as you pull away from a standstill.

Edit: Saying that though, on a non-GTI you have those rubber mounts on the front (wheelarch) subframe mounts so I suppose you could get movement there.

I don't think you'd get much subframe movement unless a number of the six bolts were to come loose as they're rigidly fixed to the floor pan and the chassis legs. Most likely some nackered engine mounts as expected I think.

My old xs used to bang when reversing which was a sure sight he bottom mount was f**ked.

Another time It also knocked loudly as I was missing two subframe bolts and the others were loose :o

Thanks for the replies, going to check the subframe bolts too then as I do have some knocking which I thought might be the antiroll bar bushes.

To feed back, I have fitted new anti roll bar bushes, full BBM group N engine/gearbox mounts and checked the sub frame bolts, talk about transformed!

The previous horrendous driveline shunt has disappeared, the knocking noises have gone and the steering{retracked) is now spot on.

The only fly in the ointment is the somewhat lumpy engine which is shaking the car a lot, vibrating dash board etc. So I have replaced all the electrics dizzy cap, rotor arm, plugs and leads which has improved the situation.

Now I have to sort the whine which I think is water pump but hopefully may be clutch release bearing as that may force a new clutch which won't be a bad thing.

Thanks for all your help, it is much appreciated.

Calvin.
