Steering Rack Uj Rubber Boot Problem On Xsara Vts Rack Conversion

Recommended Posts

fliprio

Another Xsara VTS rack question.....

I had fitted a phase 1 rack and 106 gti pump, the rubber gaitor that goes through the fire wall by the clutch pedal doesn't want to sit in the cut out properly and keeps coming out and ridding up the column until it gets in the way of your foot.

I have done a search and a few people seem to have had problems with this, is there a different boot?

Cheers

I'm struggling to remember what I've done with that in the past but I think I just trimmed a little bit off the middle of the gaitor with a sharp razor blade, IIRC that stopped it riding up the column.

Mines completely standard and unmodified with no issues for what that's worth - VTS rack, square drive non-PAS lower column and matching grommit

Is that just to open out the diameter? It doesn't seem to want to push into the hole properly either so it must be hitting on something

From doing a search it seems most people don't have the problem, it's also quite tight around the column diameter itself so some grease might help

I don't remember having problems getting the seal into the bulkhead. They can be tricky to fit at the best of times, have you ever fitted one with a standard column to give you something to compare difficulty to?

No, never fitted one, I also didn't fit this one as I have had back problems and got a local race prep place to fit the rack for me.

Is there a trick to get them in?

There's not really a trick, you just have to manipulate it into place but as it's in an awkward location it can be frustrating.

The lip that holds it in place can get damaged if it isn't in all the way round and they can go a bit crusty from exhaust heat so it's worth checking the condition of yours if you haven't already.

I have had some be a little tricky to get seated properly, they'd gone much stiffer than usual

Sounds like it's best I take it back to the garage, the only thing I can do is use my feet at the moment to try and push it back into place which isn't going to work by the sounds of it.

I used a bit if fairy liquid to help get it located.
