Driveshaft Nuts

Recommended Posts

2-Pugs

Hi all

I have removed two driveshafts from the car I am restoring - both of which look virtually new - but oddly the nut on the end of them is neither castellated nor nylock.

Don't quite know what to make of it but thinking I am going to need to replace them with either castellated and split pin, or nylock.

I seem to vaguely recall someone on here did a group buy of nylock nuts ages ago. Can anyone remember the details? I have searched but can't find anything.

Anyone have any going spare?

Anyone know what the thread size is so I can look for some?

Anyone have any other related advice about these?

The plain nuts should be fitted with a tin cover and an r clip to retain them.

Otherwise I have previously sold nyloc nuts but have run out at present. I can get more if required.

Oh, I see. Right, got it now, thanks Tom. Yes I am familiar with the cover and the R clip you mention, my other car has got those. For some reason I thought the nut was also castellated.

In that case I s'pose I need to look for a pair of those....!

It could have been a staked nut which is common on aftermarket 1.9 shafts.

1.6 and base models used M20x1.5, 1.9 used M24x1.5.

30 or 35mm nuts respectively.

Rob,

I'm bound to have a pair of the nut covers and R clips if you want me to post you a couple.

Are either side reverse thread?

sometime back we tried to remove the nuts on my 309 and could only get one side free whatever we tried. (we didn't have access to heat and that would have been the next step I guess)

Nope, both normal rh threads.

Often a big bar is needed if someone in a garage has done them up with a decent windy gun.

Heat is not the best idea, youll cook the bearing.

Thanks. I'm sure we tried that, the guy helping also had a special tool he uses for the job, which then broke!

They usually come off if you use a sign post metal pole of 3-3.5 m length which you can jump on the end of.

It's important to use 3/4" tools as 1/2" certainly will break if it's proper stuck.
