Torsion Bar Question

Recommended Posts

5mudge

Hey all... Just bought a nice F reg 205 1.9 GTi off a friends dad that's been sat since July last year. He said he fitted a rear beam last year but says it's needs new torsion bars. Now it's sitting higher on the passenger side and when I went over the speed bumps on my short journey home it felt like it had no suspension ie hard as fook. Now my question is... Does it just need adjusting or am I likely going to have to replace parts and if so where can I source new parts from??? I'm in Gloucester if there's any nice people out there that want to help me for beer tokens?!?

Sounds like its seized, and it wasnt "new" just a scrapyard replacement.

Is it worth in-seizing?

Unlikely you will get it apart if it has seized, but you could at least use the torsion bars and trailing arms if it is.

Most of the parts can be had from Peugeot/Citroen (use Warners in Tewkesbury, not Glos, they're useless there) and on ebay.

Whereabouts in Gloucester? got a few mates in the area and I'm over there fairly often too.

Tuffley mate. What is the part/s that has seized most likely?

Trailing arm shaft in the bearings.

Easy to replace? ie could I do it on the drive?

Depends entirely on your capabilities and access to tools.

As WelshPug says, trailing arm shafts and bearings. But, if severely worn the beam tube may be shagged. Getting hard to locate a decent 205 tube these days too (took me 4 beams before I found one - there is no 'real' way of telling without stripping them so it's a gamble).

It's getting them to pieces that's hard, particularly if seized. Sledgehammers/Lump hammers/heat/lots of penetrating spray/pulling tools and if that fails, a hydraulic press, oh and lots of swearing.

Don't suppose you're coming down this way this weekend?

I need to get it back on the road before May 17th when the MOT runs out so I can see/feel what needs doing/fixing.

not this weekend, but possibly midweek the week after or the weekend.

MOT often wont pick up completely shot beams, so I wouldn't worry about that

True but it's not been driven since July last year except the mile I drove it home. Virtually no brakes so would like to bed them in again,or maybe change pads n fluid if they don't improve.

Give me a shout when you're coming over if I haven't sorted it out by then.
