Be1 Gear Lever Options & Loose Gear Lever

Recommended Posts

Hello.....I've got a 1.6 cti d reg 86. & I'd like to ask a few questions please.....firstly today the gear lever fell apart..so ..I need to know the correct gearbox fitted... As I'm now looking for a cheapish replacement.....reverse is opposite first gear & you lift it up to select reverse ..so is it a be1??? If it is what French models use this gear knob...I've seen gti ones for silly money ie up to £100 wtf??? A std one will do as I'm having it sprayed later in the year..also .. it's had a recon box & new valio clutch fitted at mr clutch in Chelmsford 8 months ago.@. £575....now the gear selection feels loose..ie lots of play especially in third on the gear lever..& twice today it selected 4 the instead of 2 nd....it felt tight....so I've seen these gear rod kits for sale reasonably cheaply at around £45 they contain 3 gear rods...will this tighten up the box.?....or should I be taking it back to mr clutch for them to have a butchers

?? Lastly what is my little pugs correct colour it was first registered in Aug 1986...I'm having a cheapish job done at around

£650 ..no plastics off though..just to tidy it up..many thanks jim

It's worth checking the bolt on the gear rod pivot lever on the subframe, these work loose a lot on 205s.

Lift up reverse means it is a BE1, the same gearknob is fitted to all 205s but the insert showing the position of the gears is GTI specific and you may not need new gear rods, tighten the bolt I mentioned first and if there is still play then you might need new rods. And never take it back to Mr. Clutch, is that the place near the fire station?

As said the only real issue with old rods is they pop off and don't give a huge amount of play, As said the ball joint on the subframe is known to come loose as it the quadrant arm too,

Knob wise most 05 models used the same fitting

£575 for a clutch, a 4 hour job that is so at that price I would take it back

Yes in rainsford road Chelmsford.....I think....the car was bought off flea bay from a guy in Harrogate west yorks,,,the car has had 11 previous unloving owners...initially the gearbox wouldn't select the gears & it felt very stiff with a very low clutch.. But it got back to essex ok...330 miles....anyway ..they quoted £225 for a valio clutch inc fitting all in... Cheap......so got me hooked..as everywhere else was around £300 - £375....or more...it was booked in &

Next day I got a phone call to ask me to drop back down...when I arrived the gearbox was out ..the flywheel was scorched...it looked like it had a newish clutch fitted as the gearbox had issues. So bodged it to sell on... But he wouldn't fit the new clutch & guarantee it unless the gearbox was done at a cost of £350..I didn't have a clue as I'm not up on gearboxes etc...it's Been back once to get checked & adjusted to keep the warranty..driveshaft .....oil seals were leaking etc etc..the repair was getting done at a guys in Kent.????? It arrived next day & the box was guaranteed for 1 year & it has been fine ...a lot better..nice & smooth but it's started to mis select 2 nd & 4 ty...& go tight... Unless it's in third then it's slack & almost touches the consol ...il get it jacked up to check the securing bolt....I never checked if the car had matching numbers etc eg gearbox, engine & chassis...so for all I know it could have had a used £75 box chucked in new fluid & clutch cable..so if any members could check it all out id chuck them some cold....Carlsberg's...any one got a gear knob ?????

They're on Rainsford Lane which is the last part of Waterhouse Lane after it crosses the river, just up the road from the Peugeot dealer.

It's not going to be the gearbox itself almost certainly, just a linkage problem.

I'd be happy to take a look at it but I've moved to the other side of Colchester so it would be a long journey for you.
