Sunroof Replacement

Recommended Posts

Bit of brain picking regarding sunroofs if I may.

So I need to replace my vacuum sunroof. Haynes manual is no use (except for the exploded diagram) and after a few searches, I can only come across posts from years gone by, regarding blanking them off completely.

Does anyone have any experience in tackling this job and if so, apart from the sunroof itself, are there any little bits and pieces that get destroyed on removal that I will need to source before starting? ..And are there any differences apart from colour between the the phases? i.e. could I install a phase 1/1.5 on my phase 2 GTI?

I had a little look over the weekend and found that the rivets are suspended by what seem to be a couple of plastic washers.

Is the only reason for them being there is to provide something for the plastic trim to clip on to, or do they also provide a water tight seal? Can they be reused?

If anyone can also suggest what type of rivets I should use, I will be grateful. I have heard 'Rivnuts' being mentioned in the past.

Basically, a step by step guide will be ideal!

i have just removed my sunroof without considering anything and a few of the bolts have snapped there were also a few rivetts like yours in there too, a step by step would be handy and a place to get replacement screws would be handy too, if anyone knows anywhere??

My removal was straight forward except there were a few of the torx screws corroded solid and they either snapped off or just turned the rivnut.

For the snapped off ones these rivnuts can be replaced (M4 blind rivnuts iirc) by carefully drilling them out. I was taking the interior lining out anyway so I could get to the back of the spinning rivnuts to hold them whilst they are drilled out. Servicebox is showing the nut as still available (part number 858134) the screw (part number 840336 ) is showing as NFP.

Whilst you are at it, you should consider replacing the handle washers to keep the water out.

Thanks for the info.

Am I right in thinking that on later models rivnuts were not used? My sunroof only seems to have your standard rivet. If I can find out what size, it should'nt be a problem to refit but I am wondering if there is any difference in the sunroofs to allow for either rivnuts or rivets. eg. If I was to fit a phase 1.5 sunroof on my phase 2, would I need rivnuts or rivets?

Service box also shows a kind of gasket seal. Its NFP so does anyone know what can be used instead?
