Inspecting A Rear Beam Before Purchasing

My rear beam has started creaking and knocking so I'm looking at my options to sort it.

 

I've spoken to Welshpug about a rebuild but I need to find a decent tube first.

 

If I go look at a beam either on or off the car then other than forcing the arms to move and checking they feel smooth and there is no play how else can I be confident of its condition?

 

Is it easy to get to the bearings to inspect them as a few of the posts I have found suggest doing this but looking at the rebuild guide its not exactly a quick and simple job.

the only way to be certain is to pull the arms off and inspect the shafts and bearings, which if the torsion bars have been in a while may not be a quick task.

Someone in brecons got one I can have for £20.

no need to gamble, just be straight up and ask them to pull it apart, though its gotta be worth £20 for the arms bars and drum backplates.

 

I'd be tempted to head up for that myself if you don't as its only 30 odd miles/an hour each way.

I'd say £20 is worth it no matter what anyway, even just for spares.
