Air Filter For Gti 6 On Jenvey 45's

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Not had a 205 for 3 years know but have been thinking about it a lot recently and ended up purchasing one randomly as it just sounded to good.

It's running a standard Xsara VTS engine on 45mm Jenvey Throttle bodies with a Emrald K6 ECU. What surprised me was that the car didn't have a filter on it. I've done plenty of searches and spoke to friends and as I thought I will need to get an air filter to stop dust and debri etc getting sucked in to the engine. The previous owner only used it for track days so guessing that's why he didn't bother.

My first question is and unfortunately he got the bodies of ebay so I have no exact spec of the setup is what filter/airbox etc.. am I going to need to be best for the engine and actually fit the car? I've found a Pipercross filter and the ones on the Jenvey website but I have no idea what goes into the fitting etc and what I need...

Here's a few pictures of the engine:

Also my other thought was whether the air filter will make any difference to the setup of the engine and whether I should get it remapped but after doing a search it seems my worry was right but considering the engine is standard and i'm only using it for road and hopefully a trip to the nurburgring soon then I probably don't need to worry, but it would be nice to get the best possible set up for the car...

Cheers,

Keir

Hi Miles, Neil mentioned you built the loom for it so I thought you would possibly know it. Just looked and it is 48's... could have sworn he said 45's to me. Did get a little confused why everyone on here was using 48's...

Any idea what filter setup I should look at? Don't fancy ordering 100quids worth of filter to find it won't fit.

Never saw it complete'd and running but off topic I would replace the 2 bolts missing from the top mount.

Filter wise you'll have to measure up, I tend not to run filters but most use std jenvey back plates and clip on filter, The base plate's are universal as you need to cut the holes out for the bodies so can be moved around slightly

Cheers Miles, yeah that's what I thought. Only thing with this one as you can see in the photos is that the fuel rail sticks out further than the back of the trumpets where the filter back plate mounts? Am i correct or will the back plate actually fit under the rail?

I'll try and get a paper template or dimensions off Jenvey unless anyone on here has one?

Good observation on the top mount lol, something I hadn't noticed...

and im guessing im going to just have to re route the cables for the injectors the other side of the rail too.

You need a stepped plastic backplate or shorter pico style injectors, the latter will need a mapping session of course.

Cheers Welshpug, thats what I thought I need just couldn't find them or was unsure on if I need a specific size one but it seems there pretty standard? Found them know on Jenvey, reverie and DTA websites. Thought they would come pre drilled etc and so the pic on Jenvey site through me off having 3 holes but seems you cut them out to what suits your needs. I'm no engineer and do electrical work but the engineers at work could prob do it for me. Do you need any special tools on a mill to cut them out or are you fine just drilling and using a holesaw for the holes around trumpets? Only just stumbled across a thread the same as this through google...

Buy back plate, stepped or flat depending on best fit.

You'll have to bore out the holes to match your bodies, I bought and used a metal punch. This is the neatest way, see my build thread.

Pipercross px600 filter. Read up on the correct depths, need a certain amount of clearance from trumpet to filter material.

Ps. Put the injector wires in between the body and fuel so it isn't visible from the front.....looks neater! ;)

Cheers Simon, Just read your thread! Very nice car you have and impressed by the miles you cover at a time and the mpg. Didn't think mine was actually to bad on the way home. I would use a hole punch but not sure if they'd be suitable for GRP or carbon fibre? Always use them in metal but would have thought they may crack plastic or carbon being more brittle? Will probably get the same pipercross filter as yours. Been taking measurements and with the 60mm trumpets and a stepped 50mm box should be ok with the filter depth at 40mm. But I haven't found any internal dimensions of those and the 40mm might have came from Jenvey rather than Pipercross.

Im also guessing the little sensor in front of the trumpets is the air temperature one? so this will have to be mounted in the air box aswell...

cheers

Keir
