P3Kb Vs. Ekb... Difference In Shade? Do They 'need' To Be Lacq

Hi all,

 

My 205 will be going into the bodyshop in the next two weeks so ive been tasked with sourcing the paint (mates rates and all that :)) but im struggling to tie down the actual code for the year.. It's an 89 car, and ive looked in the threads detailing the paint codes and searched and it seems its down to two; P3KB and EKB.

 

Its looking like its most likely to be EKB given the year, am i right in saying this?

 

Also, if i order up a couple of litres of EKB 2 pack, will it 'need' to be lacquered?

given its red, you'll be painting the whole car, so does it really matter? :D

 

ask your painter mate about the clearcoat, two ways of looking at it if you don't have to though, you can cut it back if/when it fades, but a clearcoat will protect it longer...

From experience forget ordering it off the code, you need to take the car to the paint shop and get them to mix it to the car. The guy I use locally is s*it hot at this and always gets a good match, but usually this takes two or three test cards to compare to the car to get it right.

Problem will be finding an area of original paint Tom, the car had been extensively repainted in the past and im convinced its the wrong shade, its too 'modern' if that makes sense? Much too red...

 

Mei: I thought this, im not overly fussed about lacquering as its something that peels in time, so a flat colour will be fine. Just didnt want to put the EKB on and it be matte like metallics....

If you are painting the whole thing then it doesn't matter. Tell the paint shop what you are planning and let them advise you.

The redness is probably because its not that old, a nice fresh Cherry does look quite different to a neglected one :D

 

Clearcoat peeling isn't a certainty, just something that did happen on certain colours, couldn't tell you specifically as I'm not a paint specialist, but I'm sure it has to do with the process when applying or drying times etc.

So, EKB then? with a view to getting a test card done to compare it to an unpainted part of the car...

The E coded paintcodes were used by pininfarina when they did the paining of the convertible shells... The P3 coded ones are the ones used by the original (souchaux) factory...however they tend to vary a lot over years and inbetween different circumstances... (exposure to sunlight an all that)

espacially the P3KB / E3KB (basically the same thing) are prone to change a lot over the years... Orange like on top and close to pink on the bottom of cars, and thats just effect of weather and uv.

Regarding clearcoat or not.

 

Definately clear coat it. Just get the P3KB basecoat instead of 2pac.

 

The color will be nice for a long time if it's got clear on it.
